"Amelie, I... I don't know," he said, rubbing his forehead with one hand.
At that moment, silence seized the place, and it horrified me to think that perhaps he had already given up on me.
"It's okay!" I interrupted in denial. "I can wait. Yes, that's it! I'll wait for you to clear your mind. I'm not in a hurry. I just wanted you to know the truth and assure you that this time, I am determined to fight for what I feel."
He looked at me intensely, and I could perceive a clear sign of internal struggle in his beautiful green eyes. Then, he gently took my wrists and drew me towards him, offering a tight hug.
"I'm going to believe you, Amelie!" he whispered softly with a tone of relief. "I don't want to fight against what I feel for you anymore. I choose to surrender because I can't stand being apart from you."
Slowly, our bodies separated, and he looked at me with a smile. He took my hands, and in the ecstasy of the moment, I forgot that I had to hide one of them. When I remembered, it was already too late. His fingers explored the palms of my hands as his smile faded.
I tried to pull away, but he secured his grip, and alarmed, he tightened his hold on my left wrist.
"How did this get on your hand, Amelie?" he asked.
Stunned and frightened, I lowered my gaze. My eyes clouded once again, and as I raised my eyes, I decided I no longer wanted to have more secrets with him.
"I don't know how it happened, Alex."
"Does it have to do with that bracelet you were wearing? Is that it?"
"I'm scared, Alex. I don't know what's happening to me," I confessed and broke into tears. "I feel like it's not something good."
Again, Alex Evans held me against his chest, as if trying to protect me.
"Don't worry," he said, trying to calm me. "We'll get through this together. I'll explain everything to you. I don't want you to be frightened, okay?"
I broke the hug, and he began to wipe away my tears with his thumbs while holding my face in his hands. At that moment, I knew that he knew what was happening to me.
"So, you know?" I asked to make sure.
"That's right. And now I'll tell you everything."
Alex shared with me some truly dreadful things. It all begins with the bracelet I found. He confirmed what he had been suspecting since the day he saw me with the bracelet on.
That bracelet is an object designed to create a Fragment, as Alex called it. The Fragment is a ruthless being that responds to the interests of the person who possesses the jeweler's torch used in creating the bracelet.
The bracelet can change its form depending on the approaching person. It can look elegant and simple or elaborate and less colorful to attract the attention of men or women until it decides with whom to stay. It can be said that the bracelet itself has a life.
Once used by someone, the bracelet begins its work in creating the Fragment. First, it weakens the health of the host body until it completely invades it. Subsequently, it destroys the spiritual part of the individual, leaving them without feelings and without any awareness of the atrocities they are capable of committing. Thus, the Fragment emerges, according to Alex's account, a killing machine with a human appearance but endowed with supernatural strength and abilities for mental control and precise tracking of almost anything.
I wanted to find out who could have created something like this and for what motivations. Alex continued to tell me the closest thing I've ever heard to a horror story, similar to those Christopher enjoys reading.
