Lawrence, February 13th.

Days after the incident in the cabin, I’ve noticed that Alex is visibly restless. He watches every move of mine as if expecting something to happen at any moment.

Today, after classes, I hurried to the library, completed some tasks, and stopped by the cafeteria for a drink. Although Lisa and the other guys were there, I sat with them only for a brief moment before excusing myself, claiming I had a lot to do.

Upon reaching my room, I was quite surprised. Alex was sitting right in front of my study desk, immersed in reading a book. As soon as he saw me, he put the book aside and approached to hug me.

“I had an overwhelming desire to be alone with you,” he commented as he wrapped his arms around me.

“How did you get here?” I asked in total astonishment.

“There are many things you still don’t know about me, Amelie,” he said, releasing the embrace. “I want to show you more of what I am capable of.”

At the end of his statement, Alex unleashed a mysterious power with a simple snap of his fingers, and out of nowhere, two white butterflies emerged, gracefully dancing around me. Their wings radiated an ethereal light, as if they were magical creatures from an enchanted realm. I watched in awe as their movements seemed choreographed by the very essence of fantasy.

A second snap, and the butterflies vanished into thin air, leaving me astonished and speechless. Were we immersed in an enchanted dream, or did Alex possess abilities beyond my understanding? Cautiously, I extended my hand toward the place where the butterflies disappeared, as if I could touch the essence of magic still lingering in the air.

Alex, with an enigmatic smile, broke the silence.

“There are aspects of my being that you still don’t know, Amelie. In our worlds, there are secrets that only reveal themselves to those willing to discover them. Would you like to learn?”

“I would love to!” I exclaimed as if enchanted.

“Since I was little, I’ve dedicated myself to studying this form of illusionism,” he began to explain. “This is just one of the effects of traversing between dimensions. By traveling between them, your mental powers develop, allowing you to control various aspects in the physical plane and create something like optical illusions.”

“Why didn’t you tell me before?” I asked, intrigued.

“You’ve had to process a lot of information lately, Amelie,” Alex affirmed, taking my hand and leading me to the edge of the bed where we sat. “It’s necessary to assimilate the details gradually. It will be healthier for your mind.”

“This is fascinating, Alex. Right now, I imagine endless possibilities you can create... and nothing is real, everything is an illusion,” I expressed, surprised by such a beautiful ability, while a question floated in my mind. “So, will I be able to do it too? Are you willing to teach me?”

“You crossed from one dimension to another, so you should be able to develop that skill,” Alex commented with a warm smile. “Don’t worry, I can teach you. We’ll have time for that and much more.”

He approached me slowly and placed both hands on my face. My eyes instinctively closed to experience his warm touch on my skin.

“How have you been feeling today?” he asked. “Anything new?”

“I feel good,” I replied immediately, recalling what happened in the cabin. “And you?”

“My wound is practically healed, Amelie. This is another advantage of dimension shifting,” he answered, and seeing my smile fade, he continued, “Are you not going to stop blaming yourself?”

“I...”

Tears welled up. Fear took hold of me once again, and Alex hurried to hug me so tightly it seemed like I couldn’t breathe.

“Try to forget it, okay?” he whispered. “Let’s change the subject. Isn’t Lisa coming around here anymore?”

“No, not much. But I think it’s better this way,” I replied. “I don’t have to make an effort to lie; there’s simply no one to lie to. I talk to her and the other girls during classes, sometimes they invite me to eat, but we barely spend time together.”

“I don’t want you to be alone, Amelie,” he confessed. “You should insist on spending more time with your friends.”

“I don’t care to spend time with anyone but you, Alex,” I finally confessed. “I don’t need anyone else. Besides, with this butterfly in my hand, the fewer people around me, the better.”

“This nightmare will soon end, my love. You must be patient.”

Hearing Alex call me “my love” so sweetly flooded me with an indescribable feeling. I never imagined that hearing those words would awaken emotions in me that I had never experienced.

I decided to set aside conversations about the nightmare we were living and simply enjoy the moment of being together.

“Can you show me more of your skills?” I asked, smiling.

“I could do that,” he said playfully, hugging me affectionately from behind and resting his chin on my right shoulder. “But it won’t be free.”

“Seems fair to me,” I responded, playing along. “If you do something that impresses me, you can kiss me.”

“Your offer tempts me, Miss Johnson,” he added, maintaining the mischievous tone. “I think I’ll take you up on that.”

Then, Alex began unfolding incredible things before me, and my amazement knew no bounds.

Vines emerged from the room’s ceiling, adorned with small flowers of vibrant colors. The room seemed to light up with the presence of tiny fireflies, and for a moment, I felt like I was lying on the forest floor, surrounded by the magical dance of nature.

Suddenly, two butterflies approached, and a slight fear overcame me as I remembered everything we were going through. Alex immediately stopped the illusion, bringing me back to the reality of the room. The contrast between the charming scene and the harshness of our situation made my heart beat strongly, aware that I was immersed in a world where magic coexisted with darkness.

“Do you know? All this time with you has been extraordinarily valuable to me,” he said, taking my left hand and revealing the butterfly in my palm. “It’s true that we’re going through a difficult time, but I feel somehow grateful for what you have in your hand. This situation has made me realize how precious you are to me.”

“I don’t want to hurt you anymore, Alex,” I admitted, staring into his eyes. “I want to be with you without fear of losing control over myself.”

“Give me a little more time, Amelie,” he requested sweetly. “I know I can do it.”

“Do you know that I trust you completely?” I asked, bringing my face closer to his.

“Do you know that I love you irremediably?” he asked.

The chimes of 10 o’clock resonated, indicating that the lights of the school would start to dim. I stood up and turned off the lights in my room, leaving only the small lamp on the study table illuminated.

“Is it already this late?” Alex asked, looking at the wall clock near the door.

“It’s 10, and I haven’t even taken a bath,” I said surprised. “How did time escape me so quickly?”

“I feel the same way, Amelie,” Alex said, bringing his body close to mine. “I better go, but before I do, I must collect what you owe me.”

Both of us smiled, knowing what would happen. His lips were warm, and his kiss felt intense and much deeper than other times. For a moment, I was submerged in a kind of limbo, and when I opened my eyes, Alex was no longer with me.

Surprised, as if in a trance, I entered the bathroom to take a shower before going to bed. Every day that passes, I feel like I know Alex a little more. Every day that passes, I like him more, and what I feel for him keeps growing. As the days go by, I also sense Alex’s restlessness. We both know that time is running out for us. Nevertheless, I’m going to keep my hope alive. I want to be with Alex. I know this will pass soon.
