Darker Days

Chapter Three.

10:47pm

I was laid in my bed just listening to everything around me. The cry's from other rooms. The noises that were happening on other floors. Helicopters flying over head.

"Astrid?" I hear Luke say and it pulls me out of my thoughts, I look over at Luke who is looking at me concerned.

"Oh, yeah?" I force a smile and look at him but I know damn well he can look right through me.

"What is going on in that head of yours?" He asks as he comes and sits next to me on my bed and looks at me concerned.

"I am just so confused on everything," I start off by saying, "Like no one is telling us anything at all, they just keep saying that it is some sort of sickness and it'll get better soon or whatever but I really do think they may be lying to us." I look at Luke who looks just as confused as I am and he nods in agreement with me as Andrew enters the room with a trolley carrying three trays of food.

"Dinner kiddos!" He says with a smile, and seeing him smile I couldn't help but smile as well.

We sit at the smaller table that is in the middle of the room and he hands us our trays then sits with us.

"Now, this may not be five star luxury but it is the best I can do for now." Andrew says and I lean on him and he ruffles my hair. "Your mother will be up in ten minutes with her food as well." He says and I look at him

"Can we wait for her?!" I ask sitting up straight and watch as he looks to Luke then he nods.

During the ten minutes we sit and we talk about everything that is going on in the city right now, but before we could finish my mom walks in.

"Hello everyone." She smiles as she takes off all her gear she was wearing and throws it out then grabs the tray she brought and sits across from me next to Luke. "Well Astrid, did you happen to bring paper and pens? I know you like to draw." She says and I nod then she gives me a look so I know to grab it, I quickly go into my bag and grab them, I hand them to her and she starts writing, "So how was your first day of school? I understand it was cut short."

"Yeah sadly it was." Luke says as my mom then shows the piece of paper and it says 'Whatever this is, its not getting any better and people are eating people!!!'

We all looked at each other, knowing we couldn't react at all, I kept talking, knowing to carry on the conversation.

"Yeah, a girl acted out, I thought she was going to bite me but Luke saved me." I say as my mom continues to write.

"That was very heroic of Luke, we always knew he would keep you safe no matter what." Andrew says as my mom lifts the thing again

'I made sure to sign the two of you up for transportation to the main military base' the sheet of paper read.

My eyes widened then there was a loud alarm going off.

"ALL HANDS ON DECK IN QUARENTINE ZONE B!!!" The voice over the loud speaker said

"Fuck sake, you two be ready, they may be up within the next few hours." My mom says as I rush to her and wrap my arms around her tightly and she hugs me back. "I promise you everything will be okay." She says as she takes off her necklace and puts it around my neck, "I will always be a part of you, my sweet girl." She kissed my head then hugged Luke, and kissed and hugged Andrew before rushing out of the room.

I sigh and sit on the bed, Luke sits next to me rubbing my back as two nurses in full quarantine gear walk into our room. They were holding two big kits.

"We are here to run some tests." One says as she walks over to me and Luke, "Mouth open." I stare at her confused while she grabs my face tilting my head up, I watch Andrew get up and go to approach but the other nurse stands in his way, I feel my face get squeezed and my mouth opens and I look at her as she swabs my mouth, she then swabs Luke and Andrew. They then pack up and leave, leaving us confused.

"What the fuck was that?" Luke asks as he takes a sip of water

Andrew shrugs and sighs as Luke stands up.

"I'm going to go lay down." Andrew says, hugging me then shutting the door.

I lay down then Luke crawls in next to me.

"We got this." He says holding my hand and I nod, before I could say anything the door too our room swings open. Luke and I sit up quickly and look confused.

Standing at the door is two giant men in full army gear and I can hear Andrew yelling behind them to leave us alone. Luke stands up shielding me as I hear my mom shout stop. The military men stand still as I watch my mom walk in with Andrew right behind her.

"What the hell is this?!" Andrew shouts as they enter the room and my mom turns to us all.

"This is somewhere they can go where I know they will be safe." My moms eyes were filled with tears as she spoke, "You guys need to trust me okay? This isn't going to get better and they need to be safe." My mom rushes over and hugs me tightly, when she pulls away she takes her necklace off and puts it around my neck. "I love you so much my girl, survive this." She smiles as she goes and hugs Luke.

Andrew approaches me and hugs me tightly. "Good luck kiddo, may we meet again soon." He kissed my head then my mom handed me my bag and the military men grabbed my arm and Luke's arm escorting us away.

We get pulled into the elevator and it is complete silence between everyone. I look at Luke who is already looking at me and I sigh. When the elevator stops we are pulled out of it and towards the back doors where I see two cargo trucks sitting. I get pulled towards the one on the left where Luke gets pulled to the one on the right.

"Hey wait no!" I yell as I try getting out of the mans grip but he tightens it and pulls m e into him.

"Do not make this difficult." He says in an annoyed tone and picks me up, throwing me into the back of the truck as he gets in, he then taps the side and we pull off.

Tears were in my eyes as I sat next to him, I watched the hospital get smaller and smaller as we drove farther and farther away. I kept crying, having no idea what was going to happen next. Before I could think everything went black.
