"Have I ever mentioned to you that I'm an ex-momentum investor? Inveterate active trader, even?" You asked. "Not to say I've abandoned the market, but I'm far more learn'd and laissez-faire."

"In passing," L replied, flicking a chunk of fiberglass off his knee.

"Is your portfolio lusty?" Watari queried.

"It is, thank you for asking," you chirped, turning your leg. "62% stocks, 38% bonds, and I plan to incorporate some real estate. Mainly via index funds and international markets, but I do dabble in emerging and domestic small-to-mid caps."

"Very conventional."

"I have a tenth of my earnings dedicated to riskier investments, but I digress. As a result, I tend to monitor the crests and troughs of the Nikkei." You handed your laptop to your coworker. "There's been some interesting anomalies recently."

L prodded at your trackpad as Watari pried open the remains of your cast. You wiggled your toes—the first time you could with full range of motion in awhile—and wriggled your foot free. "With the biweekly deaths of tycoons, it's a pretty bear market. However, one company's stock has been skyrocketing uninhibited."

"The Yotsuba Corporation?" L murmured. "What do they do, again?"

"A bit of everything. Entertainment, finance, military, resorts, tech. Heavy industry, too." You recalled L probably didn't really care. "What matters is how many points they've been up since Yagami and Amane's release.

"At first I merely thought them lucky. Yotsuba has a finger in every pie, so to say." You reached across your beach chairs to reopen some tabs. "But when I compared their performance with those in their industries, not only were they still outperforming-"

"-Each death broadcasted corresponds to a spike in their market value," L finished for you, bringing the laptop closer to his chest. "They've benefitted immeasurably from Kira's kills. Every one."

"Right." You'd chosen to wait around a month and some change before you brought that to L's attention. Let Rem get situated and all. "It's been happening since the murders restarted, too, now that I'm looking at it."

"Kira-" L was cut off by a lurch sideways, courtesy of his handcuff. You looked to the source to see Yagami fleeing from Amane, Mogi hovering over them like hawks. "-has been assisting the Yotsuba Corp?"

"Seems so." You watched L give an equally rough crack of the nylon rope connecting them, and watched the transversal wave produced travel across its taut medium to slap Yagami on the arm, inciting a yelp. He brought the keyboard level with his nose.

It was Amane's idea to go to the beach, and when the task force at last caved, it was your idea to temporarily swap L and Yagami's typical restraints for a longer, elastic alternative.

You didn't think L would actually agree, but he was keener on keeping out of the sun's blistering stare than you thought. The plethora of parasols that surrounded L aptly warded it off; the blue light of your screen was all that illuminated him, producing a chiaroscuro reminiscent of El Greco's oeuvre.

"How does your leg feel, miss [L/n]?" Watari ripped the last strip of plastic away from your calf, dropping the shell into a tote bag on the sand. You raised it slowly, re-calibrating the weight—certainly lighter sans its prior bindings.

"Far better than when I first injured it," you admired with a smile. "Thank you, Watari, you're a doll. I'm sure the vitamin D is catalyzing bone mineralization, as well."

"I'm glad one of you is profiting." Both you and Watari's eyes slid to your shielded superior. It's not as if you expected him to wear swim briefs, but you doubt his signature long-sleeved shirt and jeans were of much comfort. Even you were dressed for the weather.
