Where Hatori fit in the task force's monstrous jigsaw became apparent quick. "You're a miracle worker, Dainosuke! Thank you so so so so much!"

With a model and the vice president of marketing's son at your disposal, infiltration via an up-and-coming Yotsuba ad campaign in need of a mascot was a no-brainer. L cleared the plan almost instantly.

"Gosh," Hatori chittered. "It's nothing, really. Any friend of [L/n] or Yagami's is a friend of mine, I'd be more than happy to put in a good word. I can't guarantee anything, mind you. You'll still have to audition, undergo an interview, all that."

"That's okay! Misa can take it from there!" Though the most tangible aspect of Hatori's presence was the reverberation of your phone when his voice swelled, Amane insisted on holding it in front of and level with her.

Not far, but not too close, either. The distance a hypothetical Hatori would be from her in corporeal conversation. "And then I'll break into VT Enterprises! I'm so sick of working NHN's lame-o dramas, I'd rather watch paint dry. Hideki's been trying to replace me for awhile, too—he has this new show coming up, and he insisted that upstart Hamazaki Ami play the female lead instead of me. We're always costars on these kinds of things! Can you believe him?"

"...Totally!" He supplied. "That's, like- ridiculous of him!"

"You think?" You marveled aloud. "I'm keen to hear your expanded stance on the matter."

Not to say the method of approach was as clear cut. Alone with Amane on her personal floor, chatting your puzzle piece up for hours at a time wasn't up there in your predictions or predilections, but here you were and had been for the past few days.

The boy deflected your pressure with ease. "You know? I don't think I know enough to say anything confidently. Misa, could you elaborate on your relationship with Ryuga?"

"Elaborate? What's there to elaborate on?" The blonde blustered, bringing the phone beneath her chin. You could see some condensation collect on its screen, if you squinted. "He's a pain to work with—and!—he's not even that good-looking."

Her final comment earnestly intrigued you a smidge. "That was uncharacteristically splenetic of you. Were you and him ever...?"

"What?" Amane has a habit of opening every sentence with a call for clarity, even if she understood what you said; the way her face twisted answered your question well before her retort. "Ugh, no! Do you mean-? No! Not like it'd change anything, but he swings the other way."

"What?!?" Your listener tittered. "How do you know??"

"First of all." She lifted a finger. "All other actors Misa's worked with have asked her out by the end of filming, so that told me something was up with him.

"..Second..? Of all." Part of you wondered how long she could keep her count. "I caught him swapping spit with his ex-manager in a dressing room once."

"WHAT???" Hatori's roar of laughter was a recurrent guest nowadays in these calls, unique as it was contagious. Though you weren't sure who was listening in today, you exchanged a lively look with one of the many cameras nestled in the corner of Amane's room.

Maybe L, probably Yagami. The latter used to participate in the sessions himself (and by physical extension, L), but couldn't be trusted not to stiffen rapport. He'd always get so pettish. "Third of all-"
