You're not sure how long it's been when you finally wake up, but the building next to you is still burning and there's still light in the sky, so it can't have been long.
You're laying down, which is nice, but the second you lift your head, a migraine makes itself known. You groan, raising a hand to your head.
"Hey. Hey," someone murmurs softly, and you know it's Levi. "Stay there."
Oh, god. It's Levi. You blink a few times to try and clear your vision, and you can make out Levi through your unshed tears. "Hi," you mumble. "Are you... am I?..."
Levi huffs; then, you feel his hand in your hair. "Relax. Take your time."
You exhale hard, trying to calm the raging headache that's keeping you from following his instructions. "Head hurts," you get out.
A rustle. "I have meds."
That makes your eyes open again. With a gentle hand under your shoulder, Levi helps ease you up to a seated position, and he presses some pills into your hand. He's holding a bottle of water.
It takes you longer than you like- you feel insanely disoriented. But you manage to swallow the pills, and when you lay back down, Levi puts your head into his lap. His fingers comb through your hair. "You're okay," he murmurs. "You're safe. Take your time."
For someone who's really not a talker, that was kind of exactly what you needed to hear. You let yourself sink into Levi's touch, trying to ignore the desire to pass out again.
You both sit in silence for a while. After some amount of time- it feels like an eternity and seconds at the same time- the medication that Levi gave you kicks in, and the world feels a lot more manageable. Slowly, you push yourself up to a seated position, hands on Levi's legs as you stabilize yourself. "Better?" Levi asks.
You nod. "Yeah. How- what happen? What did I- you're bleeding."
You reach for Levi, fingertips brushing at some blood that's running down the side of his head. It's trickling down his neck and bloodying his grey shirt. "I'm fine," Levi dismisses.
"How'd that happened?" you say with a frown. "I can wrap it."
"We're a bit low on supplies." Levi's eyes flicker down to your knee and you follow his gaze; he's wrapped your knee in a shirt of some kind. "I'm fine. Just a skim."
"Skim of what?"
"King of Spades shot me."
Your eyes go wide. "He shot you in the head?"
Levi sighs, looking away. "Skimmed."
"He shot you in the- oh my god, Levi," you babble, trying to wipe away some of the blood, but you end up just smearing it across his neck. "Oh my god. When? What happened?"
"Not sure. Tackled him off of you and everything after that is a blur. I think he reloaded my gun-" Levi sounds more bitter than you've ever heard him be- "and shot me. He went after Eren and I went after him. We blew up the store as planned but he was still alive. Immobile, but alive. I shot him."
You feel like you're listening to him talk in a sermon of some kind, because you're sitting there with your jaw dropped. "Shit," you breathe. "And then you found me?"
"Yeah." His eyes flicker down to your side. "You remember what happened?"
Your side suddenly heats up. It's all in your head, you know that- but it burns just the same. "Yeah," you say, shoulders sinking. "Yeah. You... you burned me. To seal the wound. Right?"
Levi's expression is tight and pained. "Cauterized. The stab wound was too bad, it was all I could think of."
He sounds upset. "It's okay," you try to reassure him, and you grab his hand. "You did the right thing."
