Anastasia Baudelaire — or Nat as she preferred to be called — was what one could define as a spoiled rich kid. She grew up with everything she could ever want, right at her fingertips. But that wasn't enough for her. She wanted to live.
Her parents and the local law enforcement seemed to think she was living a bit too much, because it wasn't long before she was sent to the Wilderness School on accounts of underage alcohol abuse, disorderly conduct, and truancy. By comparison, Nat was one of the tamer students, but that wasn't important to anyone. In fact, she was thriving. She had become one of the most popular students overnight, with everybody wanting to receive a piece of her family's fortune.
Of course, what earns friends, also earns enemies. Leo Valdez couldn't stand Nat, and the feeling was mutual. He couldn't wrap his mind around how someone who had everything could just throw it away for no reason at all. He resented her, and everything she could have been. Meanwhile, Nat didn't like Leo for the simple reason that she found him extremely annoying. The two teenagers went out of their way to avoid each other, so of course Coach Hedge assigned them to be partners on the Grand Canyon field trip.
