"your results came back in. luckily the tumor in your liver hasn't grown in size, but we still have to get a biopsy to rule out cancer." mirae stared blankly, listening to the doctor who was currently assigned to give her the news.

she believed it was a different doctor every time she was here, but in reality she just didn't have the energy, nor mind capacity, to learn all their faces and names.

there were some doctors that she was forced to know.. dr. lee, her mother, being one of them. "is there not the new treatment? why can't you try that?" dr. lee said, crossing her arms over her chest.

"dr. lee, the CDC hasn't even approved of that treatment. i wouldn't suggest placing those medications on your daughter when we aren't even sure of the risks yet." mirae shut them out, staring to pay attention to the other things in the room.

the clock on the wall, how slowly the second hand was moving. the silent show that was being played on the tv, courtesy of her mother. she hated this environment. she hated the hospital. she hated everything about it.

"mirae, you're starting college next week for the fall semester, right?" mirae nodded, the girl trying not to mess with the IV that a nurse had placed into her hand after the initial diagnostic tests.

she was used to all of this. the fluctuation of appointments. the different mediations. different tests. being at the hospital more than at home. going to clinics. being a test subject. she was used to it.

"mirae you have to listen to me when i say you cannot expose yourself to outside bacteria as often as you'd like to.. just for now. your biopsy will be scheduled and we will contact you when we figure out a good day, okay?" the doctor said once more, mirae just nodding once again.

the doctor asked for mirae's mother to step out with him, talking about god knows what. she just wanted to go home. and sleep in her own bed. "mimi, funny seeing you here again."

mirae looked up from her IV, accustomed to the familiar nickname, "hao!" mirae waved from her hospital bed, the boy standing at the door, mask on his face.

"what'd they say? are you still in the clear?" hao stayed standing at the door, knowing the protocol with how immunocompromised mirae was.

"the tumor hasn't grown.. but they still wanna take it out. that doctor said i'll have a biopsy to rule out cancer soon." zhanghao nodded, an interning doctor excusing himself to walk into the room.

zhanghao saw the intern, waving bye to mirae to excuse himself and head back to his own hospital room.

this interning doctor was always here, helping mirae. talking to her, making her feel like the hospital was normal. it seemed like he always knew what to say to make her feel more comfortable. when the doctors around mirae allowed the girl to venture the hospital, she always saw him and another doctor.

the two doctors weren't always there, but when they were they knew how to bring the fun. the two were studying at the same university and apparently that's how they became friends. mirae honestly knew nothing about the staff that took care of her, as harsh as that sounds to say.

the girl just had no interest in learning about them, she didn't think it would be fair to them to get close to her as a person, just for her to die. not that she would die, that's just what she believed.

she could never put that type of burden on their shoulders, so she never asked for their names. mirae only being able to nitpick them out by their facial features. a mole, or a dimple.

"hey mirae. i heard the good news." he said, a small smile stuck on his face. mirae smiled back at him, still not knowing what to say to the pretty boy who was tasked to take her vital signs every time she was here.
