The Morning of Kent

(Maya)

My alarm rang at 8:00am, and I rolled over. I shouldn't have stayed up drawing until 2am.

My arm rested over my eyes until I decided to get up and get ready. I groaned as I sat up on my bed. I stared at the floor for a bit before I walked over to my closet, my eyes still trying to get adjusted to whatever sunlight peaked through the clouds and my window.

I decided on my favorite pair of comfortable white pants, warm leggings for underneath, a red turtleneck sweater, and my brown Doc's.

I sat at my desk for a bit after I had gotten ready. I had even done some light makeup, a rarity nowadays. I held the only frame on my desk, a picture I had put up of my mom and I. I was probably 5 years old in it, and she was her young 28 year old self.

I sighed. I miss you mom. A lot.

My desk was a large wooden desk, with two layers to it. The first layer was the actual desk area where tons of my pencils scattered all over it and in the back were my class notebooks, the only thing neatly stacked. I wiped off some crumbs from last night, scooping them into my hand and throwing it away. The second "layer" was just cabinets, more storage for my other things. I had put some of my important documents in there.

I looked over at my watch, 8:50am. I should get going.

"8:50am"

I went for a morning run this morning since I knew I wasn't going to be able to get a normal work out in, took a shower, and had arrived to our meet spot about 15 minutes ago.

My dad always emphasized the importance of timeliness, engrained it in me so much that I was never late to my classes, or anything. Even if I tried.

There were a few other people here, mostly chatting with each other, some looking so tired all they could do was space out.

No sign of Maya yet. Maybe she'd fallen asleep again and hadn't heard her alarm.

But right as I finished my thought, she came down the stairs. Completely opposite than the rush she'd been in yesterday. She looked straight ahead, quickly spotting me and made her way over.

"Hi" she said and actually smiled.

"Hi-"

"Hi Maya!" Caterine replied behind me.

I turned around to find Caterine also walking up to our circle of seats, and watched as they both greeted each other.

Caterine turned to me after greeting Maya, "Kallias, hi" her tone warm, and her face blushed.

I grinned at her, "Hi Caterine"

Before I left my room I got a text from my dad who was probably more excited about my trip than me.

"Hi honey. I hope you enjoy today! Just try, that's all you gotta do. Love you"

I faced my door and took a deep breath in, deep breath out.

Try, I said to myself. Yes, I could try I suppose.

I left, and made my way down, eventually entering the main living room area where we were all meant to meet.

The first person I spotted was the guy from yesterday which was great for once. I didn't have to awkwardly find - or worse, choose the spot for my group to meet. He was leaning forward in his chair, his elbows pressed against his lap, and his fingers were interlaced under his chin, holding his face. He looked pensive before he raised his eyes from under his dark eyebrows, making no facial expression as he watched me walk over.
