January 3rd

I wish winter break could last forever, but sadly that's not possible. The sound of my alarm clock keeps going off as I mentally prepare myself to get up and out of bed. Today is the first day of school, and I guess I should be excited since I'll see everyone again every day, but even friends can't make school appealing.

I throw on a pair of sweatpants and a hoodie and decide that's the best I can do. When I walk downstairs and get a bowl of cereal ready, my mom sees me and the look on her face instantly tells me she's confused about my lazy clothes.

"You do know you have school today, right?"

"Yeah, I know,"

She doesn't comment anymore and instead leaves the room. I sit down and finish my breakfast, hearing the familiar honk of Larry's truck outside. Ok, let's get today over with.

Immediately as I get in Larry's truck, he glances at me and smirks.

"Someone's tired,"

"Not all of us are morning people," I roll my eyes, "Seriously, how are you so awake right now?"

"Coffee, and lots of it," he proudly states. Larry on coffee while driving does not seem like a good combo, but maybe his bad driving will wake me up.

Everyone went to their lockers to put things away, but I didn't bother, and walked straight to math. I sat down and put my head down, hoping for a small five-minute nap before class starts, but the minutes go by too fast, and the teacher walks in and announces what we'll be doing today. Thankfully it's only a worksheet of formulas we learned before break, although I can't remember shit, so I give up and decide I'll ask Todd for help later.

...

Art is the only class that can turn my bad mood into something a little more pleasant. I walk into class and take my seat next to Ash. She's concentrated on a sketch she's working on for a new project, so I don't distract her, and begin working on my own project, which I should have been working on over break, but got sidetracked. It's an easy project though, we only have to draw a portrait of an animal, any animal whether a pet or one in the wild. I wonder if Sal will let me come over today to draw Gizmo...

"Hey Ash, what are you doing for the project?" I ask her suddenly.

"I'm trying to draw a bird, but it's hard to do it from memory," she sighs, "I left my picture of one at home, but I don't want to do nothing for the class period."

"I get what you mean, but my memory isn't great, I can't even remember what Gizmo looks like," I chuckle.

...

By the time it was lunch, I felt more awake and ready for the day, even though it was halfway over already. Larry on the other hand looked like a disaster, the caffeine from the coffee wearing off and leaving him just as tired as I was this morning.

Sal was eating some chips under his prosthetic when I turned to look at him.

"Hey, can I come over today to see Gizmo? I need to draw him for my art project," I asked.

"Sure, I just have to do some homework, so as long as you're quiet you can stay over for as long as you need,"

"Thanks, you're the best!" I give him a quick side hug that surprises him, probably causing him to be nervous I'll accidentally see his face, but I respect him and don't look when I hug, just in case.
