Chapter 10: Assessment Test

I had to leave Santi in the ruined tower with Marco. I had no choice. I was no help to the situation and had no strength to face all the blood coming from Santi's wound.

The next day, while everyone woke up early to prepare for the test, I barely had any sleep. I was tossing and turning on my bed, wondering what had happened to Santi.

Alice was jittery the whole morning. We changed into a special field uniform of dark gray and black, like we were going into war. After breakfast, our group went straight to the training ground. Claudia's class had a separate schedule in the afternoon, so they could watch us before their test.

The training teacher called everyone to sign the attendance before we headed inside the cave like hall.

"Is everyone here?"

"Santi Yvo isn't here," one of my classmates called out.

The teacher sighed, as if expecting it. "The test can start without him."

Of course, he wouldn't be here. He must not be here. I hope he was recovering somewhere.

We walked through the narrow staircase until we reached the corridor below. The teacher opened the door for us to reveal a wide and dry field with a court in the middle. On the side was the medical team from the infirmary.

"We will divide each class into two groups who will face each other in a group evaluation," announced the teacher in front of the class. Ilan sa mga estudyante ang nakahinga nang maluwag.

"Mas okay na ito kaysa sa duel," Alice mumbled beside me.

The game was similar to softball. Each group had members and one leader. The leader held fifteen points while the members had five. Magkasama kami ni Alice sa team and we easily gathered members to our side.

"Sino ang magiging leader?"

"Si Olivia!" Alice announced.

Napatitig ako sa kanya bago siya hinila sa gilid. "I can't be the leader!" I whispered loudly. How could I hold such responsibility? I couldn't even properly use magic!

She squeezed my arm and whispered back, "This is the best setup for you, Olivia. You don't have to use magic as long as you maintain your score by being safe. The members will protect you and we will win this game."

Hindi agad ako sumang-ayon sa sinabi niya, pero hindi ko rin gustong maging sagabal sa mga kasama ko. The leader was the best position I could hold.

"Kulang pa tayo ng isang member," said one of my groupmates. "Sampo na sa kabila."

We inquired the issue to the teacher but he only instructed us that the leader will hold the additional points of the missing member. We scattered ourselves on the left side of the court to do some stretching. Gano'n din ang ginawa ng kabilang grupo. Alice stretched and wiggled her legs to shake out the nerves. But no matter what I did, I couldn't shake the dread I was feeling.

The game's instruction was simple—all members must not be hit by the ball and must remain inside the court, otherwise the opposing team will have their points.

But it was no ordinary game of softball. We were allowed to use magic only in two circumstances. One was to attack with the ball and two was in defense against the ball. A member will automatically be disqualified if found using magic directed to another member.

We were given five minutes to come up with a strategy. The moment the teacher blew the whistle, the game started. Alice and most of the members were in offense mode. I was the farthest from the opposing team and had the chance to watch their strategy.
