"What were you thinking?" My mom yelled. "Who was that person?"
"He said he knew you too. Said your name and military ID number."
"You never follow anyone. Unless you need to get information."My mom reassured me.
A memory passed as I put on some baggy clothes and tucked my hair into one of my hats. I put my boots on at the door and snuck out of the room. I walked to the elevator keeping my head low. As I stepped into the elevator, I heard a voice. German. But not deep. He was speaking to someone else.
"Der Kampf war hart. Aber ich habe ihnen trotzdem in den Arsch getreten." They said. Why was he in a fight? I mean I didn't care cause he won but still. I looked up slightly but I was only met with his waist. He was wearing a long compression shirt and some army-green pants. "Warum sieht er mich so an?" He? I was not a he.
I got to the lobby floor. "Tut mir leid, dass ich zugehört habe. Ich freue mich, dass du den Kampf gewonnen hast." I apologized, congratulated him on the fight, and walked away. The hotel clerks looked at me funny but I kept walking.
"Warte!" I turned around and saw the man running toward me. This time, I looked up at him completely. He was massive. "You speak English?"
"Yes," I respond.
"And you're a girl? Why are you dressed like that?"
"I shouldn't be seen outside." I saw. I observe my surroundings making sure I don't see anyone.
"Let's go somewhere more private then."
"No thanks." I turn around and walk away.
"Ok fine. That came out funny. German is my first language." He said, following me. "You speak German right?"
"Ja."
"Was ich meinte, ist irgendwo weit weg, sodass niemand weiß, dass Sie hier sind. Wie ein Pub die Straße runter oder so." A bar? Wouldn't be so bad. I don't drink though.
"Sicher warum nicht?" Besides, I know how to defend myself against a 350-pound man. We walked, talking a bit before reaching a nearby bar. We walked in and I got water with a straw to keep my mask on.
"Why the water?" He asked in English.
"I don't like alcohol."
"Ahhh everyone likes it. They just haven't found the right one," he said.
"Nah. I've tried a lot. Nothing tasted good." I shrugged. "it's whatever though." I heard his tongue click. "So, why the t-shirt for a mask?"
"I don't like my face," He said. He sounded quiet. "And you?"
"A vow to my parents."
"Oh?"
"Yeah. Military family. Military daughter. Military promises."
"I'm in the military too."
"Oh cool." I decided to change the topic before I was killed for being in a different country. "So, why were you at the hotel?"
"Confidential information. I'm sure you understand." I nodded. That was just enough. That meant that I would see him there. Most likely, they are wearing the same mask. "You?" It seemed like he only knew a few words, but I didn't mind.
"A party. Oh, I'm sorry. Gala. I'm a guest."
"How funny." he chuckled, lifting his mask just above his mouth and taking another drink of his whiskey.
"What's funny?"
"The confidential thing is that." He put his glass down. "Maybe I'll see you there."
"Maybe. I'll be with my husband though."
