Hot shot is five years old. He lives with his parents Heatwave and Quickshadow. They all live in Fort Worth Texas. They all lived a very happy and normal life.

Heatwave his father is a firefighter. He is a very brave and strong. He has helped save many lives over the years. He is calm in an emergency. He taught Hot shot about safety and helped him learn about it too. He is a very loving and loyal father and husband. He loves his wife and son with all of his heart.

Quickshadow his mother is a stay at home mom. She comes from a very wealthy background and she has a lot of money in her account. She got the family a nice house to live in when they move. She is very good at keeping the house running. She does all the chores no problem. She takes really good care of her son. She takes Hot shot with her often when she needs to run errands. She is also an excellent cook and baker. She sometimes let's Hot shot help her. She is a very loving and devoted wife and mother. She loves her husband and son with all of her heart.

Hot shot is a highly active little boy. He loves to run, jump, climb and play. He loves sports too, he likes to play tee ball, soccer, do martial arts and gymnastics. He hopes to do more sports when he is older. Hot shot loves to ride his bike, he loves to roller skate, and he loves to jump on his trampoline. Hot shot doesn't like staying still for a moment.

They loved their lives in Fort Worth. Things were going really well for them right now.

Today Hot shot was playing outside. He was very busy in the front yard. He was running around and playing with some of his toys. Hot shot was having a lot of fun too. Little did he know his life was about to change forever.

A drunk driver was driving around all erratically.  Coming down Hot shot's street and then he swerved into Hot shot's yard.

Hot shot saw the car and didn't have time to react. The car hit Hot shot and he was thrown to the ground a bit of distance away. Then the driver drove off. Hot shot was in pain and crying on the ground.

Luckily an off duty EMT saw and ran to Hot shot's aid. "Where does it hurt kid?" the EMT asked.

"My lower back," Hot shot said. "It hurts, I can't move my legs it hurts," he said.

"You need to keep still kid," The EMT said holding his head still.

Quickshadow saw what happened and called 911. She was also now by Hot shot's side. "Mummy it hurts," Hot shot said.

"I know it does," Quickshadow said.

The EMTs, fire department and police department responded. They were rushing to the scene. Heatwave saw they stopped in front of his house.

Heatwave got out of the truck and heard Hot shot crying in pain. He rushed right over. "Son," Heatwave said getting on his knees.

"Daddy it hurts," Hot shot said crying.

The EMTs took over they were from Cook Children's hospital. They were busy keeping Hot shot still. Quickshadow explained she was inside making cookies for Hot shot. She was looking out occasionally to check to see if he was fine. Then when she took the cookies out of the oven and looked out to check on him, a big grey sports car slammed into Hot shot in their yard and then drove away. She told them the off duty EMT rushed to Hot shot's aid while she called 911. She said she saw the license plate number too. She told them the number too.

Hot shot was then placed on a spine board. He had a c-collar put on his neck. "I'm scared," Hot shot said.

"I know you are," Quickshadow said.

"It is going to be okay son," Heatwave said.

"We are taking him taking him to Cook Children's hospital right now so they can evaluate and treat him," the EMT said.

They placed Hot shot who was strapped to the spine board on the stretcher. "Okay let's move," the EMT said.

Hot shot was taken right away to Cook Children's Hospital. Hot shot was very scared. Quickshadow and Heatwave were with him. Then the ambulance stopped at Cook Children's hospital.

Hot shot was taken back and had scans done of his back. They saw Hot shot's lumbar spine was badly injured. It was injured in such a way Hot shot would never walk again. It wasn't going to be easy to tell Hot shot and his parents that Hot shot was never going to walk again.

But they knew they had to do that. The doctor came up to Heatwave and Quickshadow. "Hot shot's lumbar spine is badly injured." the doctor said. "Hot shot will never walk again," he said.

"My poor little boy," Quickshadow said.

"But other that, is he going to be alright?" Heatwave asked.

"Yes he is going to be just fine," the doctor said. "But we are going to do surgery to help correct some of the damage to his spine to help the bones heal," he said.

"Do what you need to do," Quickshadow said.

Hot shot was taken to surgery. The doctors went right to work on Hot shot's spine. They were busy correcting the damage done to it. They were going to make sure they got it done properly. That way the bones would heal correctly and Hot shot could sit up straight.

Then Hot shot was in a recovery room with him made as comfortable as possible after the surgery. Hot shot was starting to wake up from surgery.

Heatwave and Quickshadow saw him waking up.

"Ugh," Hot shot said.

"It is going to be okay Hot shot," Quickshadow said.

"Mummy?" Hot shot said.

"Yes it's mummy," Quickshadow said.

"Where's daddy?" Hot shot asked.

"I am here too son," Heatwave said.

"Where am I?" Hot shot asked.

"You are in Cook Children's hospital, you had been hurt," Quickshadow said. "You remember what happened?" she asked.

"Kind of, I was playing in the front yard, the car came into our yard and hit me, then I remember hitting the ground, then ambulance and then everything is kind of blurry," Hot shot said.

"Well you are here and you will need to stay here for a while in order to recover," Heatwave said.

"It hurts," Hot shot said.

"You back will hurt for a while, you just had surgery done on it to fix it," Quickshadow told him.

"I can't move my legs," Hot shot said.

"Hot shot the reason you can't move your legs is the fact because of your injuries you won't be able to use them any more," Heatwave told him.

"What?" Hot shot said. "You mean I will never be able, to walk, run, jump, climb or play, or do sports?" he asked.

"Well you won't be able to walk, run, jump, or climb," the doctor said coming in. "But you can still play and do sports, but just a little differently," he said. "You will be able to do those two things with the wheelchair you will get, so you can still get around if you need too," he said.

"Wheelchair?" Hot shot asked.

"Yes there are even wheelchairs meant for sports, in fact a wheelchair bound athlete can be a Paralympian which means they are an athlete with a disability," the doctor said. "When you are going to get your wheelchair you get to chose the type and how it should look. Then you need to wait for a while for it to be made and put together while using a rental chair. Then you will be able to use your own chair after it comes in you make sure it fits," he said.

"Okay," Hot shot said feeling a bit more reassured.

"Hot shot is one of five children all his age who were brought in today day because of that driver, a few of the hospitals that treat adults had some adults brought in because of him," the doctor said. "I have feeling that driver maybe drunk," he said.

"As do I," Heatwave said. "Hopefully the police will catch him," he said.

"I have a feeling they will," the doctor said.

Hot shot was resting in the bed. He was wondering how long he was going to have to stay in the hospital.
