now that the part-time superhero was finally free to help move into the new apartment, the best friends could turn their empty flat into a liveable home. it should be an exciting rite of passage. the two could finally live together after being years apart. however, jisung seemed too occupied to even crack a smile.

"you want to talk about what happened?" hyunjin's face twisted in concern as he watched his spider friend effortlessly carry a tall stack of boxes, treating them like pillows.

he knew more than anyone how jisung preferred to push aside his issues by drowning himself in work rather than talking about the problem itself. in high school, he holed himself up in his room, constructing a new web shooter after his uncle passed away rather than grieving openly. after the nasty breakup, the boy threw himself headfirst into the avengers instead of processing everything. here he was, continuing the cycle.

jisung placed the heaps of boxes next to the coffee table and brushed off the dust from his hands.

"trust me, nothing much happened. we just happened to run into each other after years of.. of that." he impatiently ripped open a sealed box as if it were tissue paper.

'that' happened to be the nastiest breakup a few years ago. one causing jisung to throw himself to join the avengers and forget his painful past.

"she also happened to have a new boyfriend. so nothing much." he shrugged.

hyunjin leaned forward, now indulged in the drama. "oh shoot, a new man? was he tall? hot? did he look broke?"

"i don't know, i don't remember. i just got my coffee and left." jisung shook his head, blatantly lying.

the searing image of the handsome man wrapping his large arm around the girl who he once knew. who once knew him more than anyone.

"i bet he was ugly. don't worry. he's got nothing on you." he encouraged his friend, attempting to lighten the mood. however, the joke failed to amuse the audience. jisung didn't even give a pity laugh. he instead concentrated on unpacking hyunjin's second box of shoes.

jisung recalled the sickening feeling once he had made eye contact with his ex. the wave of agonizing pain tugging his heart. he saw her. the person he felt comfort in confiding with. revealing his deepest secrets and finding joy in the simplest moments they shared. yet they acted as strangers as if all those cherished memories had somehow lost their reality.

"sung? you good?" his friend asked cautiously.

the tanned boy snapped himself out of his drowning emotions. what was he even doing? dwelling on these emotions never got him anywhere.

jisung flashed another one of his irritatingly bold smiles. "yeah, of course i am. i mean, it's for the best."

hyunjin nodded in silence, not believing him for one second.
