The first time Poppy came to school with a patch on her eye it made my heart sink. As first graders are, most of the class whispered and made fun of Poppy's patch. I told everyone to leave her alone because if I'm being honest I could see her light dimming. I'd do anything to see her light stay bright like it was the day we jumped on my bed.
I had friends now, insert names, and every day at lunch we'd all sit together. Since Poppy finally came back to school, I decided to tell her she could sit with us.
She came into the lunch room and had on a blue velvet dress. I wonder if she knew that was my favorite color? Watching her tell stories and make my friends laugh was the best. Even though she had just gone through eye surgery, you'd never know anything was wrong. She carried her head high and when she smiled at me, it made my heart jump up and down.
The summer before 4thgrade we finally ended up together, boyfriend and girlfriend. It was momentarybliss, like floating in a cloud misted with the sweet scent of warm vanilla. I didn't realize it then... but when my heart shattered for the first time the world stopped. To this day I have no idea why she decided to break my heart. Maybe I don't deserve to know...
(writer note - I promise I will work on making Elliott's chapters longer)
