As she sat there, holding her father's hand, The machines started to beep faster, and the monitors showed an increase in his heart rate. She looked up at the nurse, who was watching the monitors with concern. "What's happening?" she asked, her voice shaking.
"I'm not sure," the nurse replied, her brow furrowed. "But it looks like he's responding to something." Suddenly, Aurelia heard a low groan, and her father's eyes slowly fluttered open. He looked at her, recognition dawning in his eyes. "Aurelia?" he whispered.
Aurelia's face was a mixture of shock and joy. She couldn't believe that her father, who had been in a coma for few weeks, was awake and had finally recognized her. She felt a rush of emotions, from relief to gratitude to wonder. She looked at her father's face, taking in every detail. She noticed the lines on his face, the way his eyes crinkled when he smiled, the way his hair had gone gray since she last saw him.
"Dad-d.." she cried.
The machines began to beep and her father began to shiver.
The joy and relief that Aurelia had been feeling evaporated in an instant, replaced by fear and dread. The beeping of the machines seemed to grow louder, and her father's body began to tremble vigorously. The nurse rushed to his side, checking his vitals. "What's happening?" Aurelia asked, panic rising in her voice. "His vitals are fluctuating," the nurse said, her voice calm but urgent. "We need to monitor him closely." Aurelia felt frozen, unable to move or speak. She could only watch as the nurse worked to stabilize her father.
Within minutes, the room was filled with nurses and doctors, all rushing to save her father's life. Aurelia was pushed to the side, watching as the medical team worked tirelessly. She could hear them talking, but the words were a blur. All she could focus on was the beeping of the machines and the sight of her father, lying there so still. She felt like time had stopped, and all she could do was wait.
As the minutes ticked by, Aurelia felt her heart pounding in her chest. The tears kept coming, and she couldn't stop them. She felt so helpless, so powerless to do anything. She just wanted her father to be okay, to wake up and talk to her again. She felt a hand on her shoulder, and she turned to see the nurse who had been with them from the beginning. "You need to take a deep breath," the nurse said, her voice calm and soothing.
"It's important to stay calm, for your sake and for your father's."
The nurse's words were a lifeline, and Aurelia took a deep breath, trying to steady herself. She focused on the sound of her own breath, in and out, trying to stay in the present moment. The world around her seemed to slow down, and she felt a little calmer. She turned back to her father, still lying there, motionless. "He's going to be okay," the nurse said, her voice firm and reassuring. "We're doing everything we can for him."
The machine stops beeping instantly and there was a thin straight line on the screen.
The change was so sudden, so unexpected.
The room went quiet, the only sound the low hum of the air-con. The nurses and doctors looked at each other, their faces grim. The nurse who had been with Aurelia put her hand on her shoulder again. "I'm so sorry," she said slowly, her voice full of sympathy."Your father's heart has stopped."
Aurelia felt numb, unable to process what was happening. She just stood there, frozen in place and then, everything went black.
