My head felt like I've been hit by a ton of bricks

My head felt like I've been hit by a ton of bricks. I could hear the distant sounds of the familiar beeps of a heart monitor.

They were mine, I realize.

I was in a hospital, again. Only this time I'm not sure how long I've been here for.

With my eyelids feeling like a million pounds, I open my eyes, to find a dark hospital room, my mother cradling my little brother in her arms, half asleep. I could hear her distant sobs, but she felt so far away.

I groan, a sudden sharp pain hitting my body, almost paralyzing me. My mother's blurry figure freezes, "Winter?" She gasps, her image becoming clearer the closer she comes. "Mom?" I say my voice barely a whisper, my throat dry and scratchy.

"Winter!" She wraps her arms around me, a cry of relief overcoming her as she rocks me back and forth in her arms, kissing my head. "My baby." She cries. "Mom?" I start to cry, clutching her with all my might. "I'm so sorry." I gasp.

"It's okay." She smiles at me, wiping my tears with her thumbs.

I've been in the hospital many times, but never have I woken up to my mother like this. "I need to alert a doctor." She says pressing a button on the side before grabbing her phone, "She's awake." She sighs before turning her phone off and starts to run her hands through my hair.

"How long?" I mumble staring at the ceiling.
"Two months." She says, looking down at me. I just stare back at her. "Did you want to die?" She whispers. "I don't know." I say, and in response, my mother tightens her arms around me.

We sat silently for a whole hour before Chloe and Bella came storming in, eyes filled with tears as they launched themselves at me, hugging me. "Hi." I say, but their cries restricted any response, instead, they choked out and held me even tighter as my mother held my hand.

I stay still, resting my head on theirs. This was my family.

I stare at Theo as my mother gets up and wakes him up, and the second he sees me, he joins my friends and holds me just as tight, "You kept your promise." He mumbles and I put my hand over them.

And just like clockwork, he shows up just when everything seems like it's going to be okay for a little while.

My heart stops, and a lump forms in my throat as my body coils from fear and anger. "Get out." I manage to choke out and he freezes by the doorway.

But my words seemed to fall on deaf ears to everyone else, as two boys joined on the undersized bed and I almost suffocated, but the sight of him left me speechless.

His eyes hardened and his jaw clenched and unclenched, along with his fists before he drank me in, nodded in my direction, and walked away.

Closing my eyes, I let out a sigh of
momentary relief, and let sleep overtake me once again.
