The picture on the side is of Cobalt, I hope you guys like this chapter! Prepare to be surprised.
I left Ian to take care of the truck driver. I left Jo handcuffed in the car and quietly went upstairs to get our stuff. I packed everything into the overnight bags Ian and I carried and brought them downstairs. Ian, still shirtless and barefoot, was just finishing up his apology to the truck owner, citing a reckless girlfriend as the culprit.
"Here," I said, handing him his bag. I started the car as he began dressing in the passenger seat. He gave Jo a hateful look before pulling his shirt over his head.
"We get to drop her in the river now, right?" he asked me darkly.
"Wrong. I get to ride in your car until Cobalt decides what to do with me."
"Cobalt wants to drop you in the river," Ian growled. "Right?"
"Eh," I shrugged. "Yeah, but I won't."
"You are a disgrace to every hired killer out there," Ian declared.
"I know. But we, I mean I, have a life on the run to begin. You can still back out if you want." I looked at him expectantly.
Ian paused. "You're getting rid of her, right?" He jerked a thumb over his shoulder at Jo.
"Absolutely," I assured him.
"Then I will be happy to accompany you on the road," Ian agreed.
"Wouldn't you have done the same thing, had you been in my position?" Jo reasoned. I cut my fingers across my throat in warning. When it came to his car, Ian was anything but reasonable.
"No. A man's car is sacred, no matter how despicable he may be," Ian said sullenly.
"Liar," Jo scoffed.
"Thief."
I stopped it before it could go any farther. What was it about Jo that made me and Ian act like immature brats? "Jo, we're going to put you on a plane, and you will be forever gone from our lives."
"Good. That's all I want."
"Where are you going to go?" I didn't care, as long as she went somewhere away from me and Ian. Especially Ian. He still looked like he wanted to strangle her.
"My parents used to take me up to a cabin in Montana. I still have the deed," she said.
"Perfect. Montana is far away from wherever we're going," Ian said.
"We don't know where we're going yet."
"But now we know we're not going near Montana," Ian countered. I rolled my eyes.
"Get the map and find an airport, would you?" The sooner we dropped Jo off, the better. The stress of the situation was giving me an intense longing to shift into panther form. I would probably do just that after she was gone.
The nearest airport turned out to be three hours away. Time was running out for me and Ian. We had to get out of this area, and fast. Jones had probably already figured out what had happened and was boiling mad. Not that it didn't serve him right. I told him I didn't want this job in the first place.
"Now that we're on your side, can you tell us why you have to stay away from Harting?" I asked out of boredom.
"Don't answer that," Ian interjected. "Just stay quiet." Ian's earlier lust for Jo had all but vanished. Ah, fickle boy.
"No, I can't," Jo answered me. "Sorry."
I sighed and rolled my shoulders out to loosen them. "Not even a hint?"
