IT TOOK A LOT TO IMPRESS SALEM. She was the glass half-empty sort of girl. The type that had a pessimistic outlook to life. Realistic, as she liked to put it. Not everything was sunshine and rainbows — shit happened, and it was better to be prepared for when it did than to have her world shattered to pieces because she was too damn happy. That wasn't Salem. She doubted it ever would be.
And, most certainly, she was not impressed with Grimmauld Place. In fact — she hated it. The stench that lingered in the thick air and the compressing atmosphere of dark magic against the back of neck caused her eye to twitch repetitively. She'd never said it before, but she longed for her own home. Tucked away inside her bedroom where nobody could reach her.
Her gaze flickered between her Professor and his older brother. Salem knew the story of Sirius Black; considerably well, actually. It had been a momentary lapse in her own judgement when she'd been strolling the halls of Hogwarts of her Third Year after curfew — a habit of hers — and had come across the Astronomy teacher and well-known ( and judged ) younger brother of the escaped mass-murderer.
Regulus Black had always been Salem's favourite Professor. He was meticulous in the way he instructed them, and despite the cold facade he held majority of the time, he allowed a sliver of mellowness to seep into his expression. And when Salem had spotted Black with the faint tracks of emotion staining his cheeks . . . Salem couldn't exactly leave.
She wanted to, though. She didn't do very well with sentimental moments of bearing one's soul for others to see. But she had been intrigued; Regulus Black didn't seem like the sort to cry. Especially not somewhere so brazen for anyone to see, but she was somewhat glad it was her. Her and Black had an understanding of some sorts — a stoic look and discreet sign of reality was the best route to getting what either wanted.
