'My name is Titania. I am The Queen of the Fairies.'

Queen of the Fairies

That's not the first I heard of her. Tinkerbell had told me about her life and her fellow fairies. She told me that The Queen, is like the Leader of the fairies. Her will and words are the backbone of the fairies' life. I wasn't surprised, I mean, isn't that what The King and Queens supposed to be? As I was spacing out, several golden light balls—fairies—approach The Queen. It seems that the fairies are greeting her. Among them, Tinkerbell is also there.

'Long time no see, your Majesty!' One of the Lost Boys shouts. Hearing him, the others follow suit.

'Long time no see, boys.' Kindly, The Queen greeted them. Slowly, she descents. 'I see that you have a new friend.' She comments as she is flying closer. 'What is your name, boy?'

'Uhh...' A little flustered, I muster my courage. 'My name is Peter...., Peter Nicholson'

'I see. I assume you are from the Mainland as well?'

Mainland?

As I am getting confused, Tinkerbell rescued me. She flies in front of me and started gesturing something. The Queen listens intently and nods once in a while. The other fairies, who is watching, also seems to listen intently.

'I see...' She starts after Tinkerbell finishes her story. 'You poor thing... Please stay here as long as you like'

'Thank you, Your Majesty!' The boys starts cheering as I thank her.

'You're most welcome, Peter. Be sure to have fun here.'

Tinkerbell leaps in joy. She hastily approach The Queen and shakes her hand. I don't think that's an appropriate way to thank The Queen. The others fairies think so too. That's why some of them are scolding her now. The mood seem to have been lifted. The boys are chatting lightly now. However, something is bothering me. It's the mermaid. She said something about girls. Now that I think about it, I have never seen a girl in the island, except for the fairies of course.

'Say, Your Majesty' I call her loudly.

'Are there any girls here?' The fairies seem to stare at me now. 'Human girls I mean.'

'Human girls?'

'Yes'

Interested, the Lost Boys start to listen intently. The Queen doesn't answer immediately. 'There are no human girls in Neverland. Never was, never is, and never will' She answers. The Boys, including me, stare at her curiously. She turns her back and slowly fly away. 'Due to plenty of rules and cautions, human girls rarely get lost'. With those words hanging in the air, she flies up the cliffs. Several fairies who have been flying around the Lagoon come and speak to her.

'Well then, it seems that I have another business to attend to' Facing us, the Queen starts to bid us goodbye. 'Do make yourself at home and have fun. Until we meet again'

We waved the fairies goodbye as they turn back into scattering ball of lights. Our playtime resumes. However, I just can't get the image of the mermaid I met today out of my head. As we are swimming around and catching fishes, my mind keeps playing my conversation with the mermaid. I am currently distracted, that is probably why Tinkerbell pulls my cheek with all her strength.

'Ow!' I  look to my right to find Tinkerbell crossing her arms and puffing her cheeks. 'What is it?'

Tinkerbell huffs and refuses to look at me. 'Alright then' I shrug and continue catching fish. 'Say Tink' Still refusing to look at me, she doesn't answer. 'Is there a mermaid in the Lagoon?'

Tinkerbell seems to be caught of guard. She looks around before beckoning me to get closer. 'There is one mermaid' She is almost inside my ear, yet her voice is still so quiet that I can barely hear it. 'She is bad, Queen Titania said that she is to be found'

'What? Why?' Tinkerbell shushes me.

'We are not supposed to talk about her'

'It's not like she's here'

'The wind listens, the earth feels, and the trees whispers. Everything in this island belongs to her'

The way she says scares me, but I keep asking. 'How about the water?'

'Fairies cannot go into the water. Not even the Water-talent fairy can survive with wet wings. The water belongs to someone else, someone bigger, more powerful'

Curious. I'm curious, but I'm also excited. How can someone not be? It's a mystery. An adventure. My head is filled with what could have happened. My heart is beating loud, so loud that it masks all the sound around us. My blood is rushing. I can feel my blood being pumped all the way to my fingertips. I have decided. That decision is what brings me back to the Lagoon at midnight.

Neverland is so much different at night. It's really dark. I always think that moonlight would provide enough light at night, but I was wrong. The thick forest really make it hard for the light to shine through.  I wouldn't be able to go to the Lagoon if Tinkerbell wasn't there. Maybe that is why fairies glow. I look back as I keep trudging forward. The home of the fairies, Pixie Hollow stands proudly in it's golden glow. I wonder if they already know what I am trying to do.

After reaching the Lagoon, I immediately step into the water. The cold water is rising as I go further from the shore. I dunk my head into the water and shouts 'Mermaid!'. I raise my head and search for her. Tinkerbell is flying around as she helps me search. 'Mermaid!' The second scream makes a small ripple in the water. 'It's me! Peter! The Lost Boy you talked to!'

I am about to shout for the third time when someone yanks my hand. I look down and see the mermaid smiling at me. Before I can react, she pulled me underwater. Shocked, I close my eyes and hold my breath. When i open my eyes, I am already sitting on a cave floor. I take a deep breath and cough out some salt water. The mermaid had really just dragged me into the ocean.

'I'm sorry, I didn't mean to be so rough' She apologizes, as I wiped my face with my hand. 'I just don't trust the fairies'

'Tinkerbell is my friend! You can trust her'

'Well, she is not my friend!' She retorts. Regretting her tone, she looks away. 'I'm sorry, after what happened to girls, I'm just...so afraid of the fairies now'

'Fight them then'

'Pardon?'

'You're a full size person! And they can't go into the water anyway. Why don't you just attack them? Or..or maybe make some traps?'

I don't know why, but The Mermaid is now looking at me in shock. She stares at me for a second before putting on some kind of sad face. 'Right. Of course this kind of kid is what they want' Though she is mumbling, I can still hear her.

'What do you mean?'

'Nothing' She shrugs. 'I...don't think I have introduce myself. My name is Pearl'

'I'm Peter, Peter Nicholson. Anyway, why are you so afraid of the fairies?'

She sighs before starting her tale. When she was first brought to the Neverland, she was excited. Living with five siblings was difficult. Moreover, she was the only daughter. She was sick of doing house chores while her brothers were playing. There were only eight people in Neverland then, four boys and four girls, including her. They spent the first few weeks exploring together, but once they had settled in, they played separately. Not because of any conflicts or problems, the girls and the boys just wanted to play different things.

Days turn into weeks and things starts to change for The Girls.
