Tick, tick, tick, tick...Jessie glanced at the clock on the wall of the hospital waiting room. She had never heard a clock that ticked so loudly, or maybe she was just imagining it.
She began to fidget, the hard red plastic seat wasn't the most comfortable thing to sit on, and her bottom had begun to hurt within twenty minutes of being sat on it. Now an hour had passed and she was so close to standing up, but she didn't know how much longer she'd have to wait.
She turned to her left and looked at her father in law, hoping to draw some comfort from him. He'd been her tower of strength so far, but now even he seemed to have run out of comforting words.
"What is taking them so long?" Fabian asked, breaking the silence.
"Fabian, we are all worried," Norbert began. "We have to let them do their jobs. Seb is their priority, not us. They will speak to us when they actually have some news to tell us."
"We have to be patient Fabian," Britta said gently from where she was sat opposite Jessie.
"Patient? That's easy for you to say Britta, he's not your brother!"
"Enough," Jessie snapped. "He's my husband, and I don't know if I'm ever going to..." Jessie's voice trailed off.
"I'm sorry," Fabian said. "I'm just..."
Silence descended again.
Tick, tick, tick, tick...
Jessie lost track of how much time passed. She shut her mind down, blocking out the living nightmare she was in and focussing Seb and herself and the amazing times they'd shared. There would be more, there had to be more. This couldn't be it!
She vaguely heard different voices as more people arrived. She heard Fred telling them that Charles had won the race. Good for him, but she didn't care. All she cared about was Seb. She heard Martha too, and Valentino. Everyone was asking how Seb was, but no one knew anything.
"Jessie, is there any news?" Jessie didn't recognise the latest voice. She glanced up, and saw the Williams Team Principal, James Vowles, looking down at her. She shook her head sadly.
"Nothing," she replied. "How's Logan?"
"He's ok, a bit sore but nothing's broken. He's just worried about Seb. I told him I'd find out what I could."
Jessie smiled weakly. She was glad the young American wasn't seriously hurt. "I'll
get someone to let you know when we hear some news," she promised him.
