There once was a noble and prosperous planet known as Gallifrey. It was a spectacular world, with red grass and huge cities incased inside of enormous glass bubbles.

However, the planet was not known for its sights. Gallifrey was more widely renowned for its people, an ancient and dominant race known as the Time Lords (it is rumored that the human race are descendants from them). Just as the Jedi , the Time Lords were a people who kept peace and prosperity throughout the Universe. Using their ability to travel through the time vortex in a machine known as a TARDIS (Time And Relative Dimension In Space), the Time Lords could go on spectacular adventures.

Time Lords had two names. One was the name that they were called by in public, their "Nickname" (i.e "The Warrior" or "The Fighter") . The other was somewhat more special. Only the most important people in a Time Lord's life would ever learn their real name. However, the citizens of Gallifrey were not just special in that they could travel through time, but the Time Lords were unique in the fact that they had a method for cheating death.

At the beginning of their life, Time Lords are granted 12 "regenerations" with provide them with a total of 13 lives. This means that if they are shot, or poisoned, or fall off a cliff, or any way that an average human would die, then there is a way they can live again. Using a mysterious energy, the Time Lords can destroy their current life essence, body, and personality to become a completely new person and live again. They will, however, keep the same memories. The only way a Time Lord can be killed for good is to kill him again in the middle of his regeneration cycle.

Unfortunately, just as with the Old Republic, good times had to end. The Time Lords found out about the creation of a new being by a man known as Davros on the planet Skaro. The aliens were known as "The Daleks". The Daleks were the ultimate war machine.  At creation, Daleks were purged of all emotion except hate,  and they looked like a sick mixture between brain matter and a squid. Next they were placed inside a mobile shell made of Dalekanium, surrounded by a force field almost no weapons could penetrate. A battle fleet of 10 Million was created, and they set off to "Exterminate" all species so that they could become the only race in existence.

Obviously, the Time Lords were terrified at the thought of such a foe. In desperation, they sent their brightest and most valiant warrior, The Doctor, on a mission back in time to destroy the Daleks before they were created.

But the Time Lord plan was discovered by the Daleks, and the Doctor was stopped (Sent Back to Gallifrey) . In a seething attempt at revenge, the Daleks focused their entire military might on the Time Lords. The Time Lords fought back valiantly, and in the end, turned to desperation.

In a plan known as "The Final Sanctum", the Time Lords were to destroy time and rise above the dead races, leaving their mortal bodies behind. But the Doctor would not stand for it. He was appalled that his once Pacifist race was even considering this course of action.

In a final attempt to stop them, The Doctor time-locked the entire war. This meant that no living soul could enter, escape, or make contact with anybody within the time-lock. Thus, the Doctor became the last of the Time Lords, and has turned to pacifist ways for as long as he lives.

This story takes place after the events of the Time War during the Doctor's Tenth and Eleventh Incarnations. He mistakenly becomes a rebel leader after his TARDIS gets caught up in the rebel attack.
