I hate how I have to treat Jace. He has been nothing but kind to me, and now I have to cut him out of my life like he's nothing. Jace is everything to me. Candace stops me in the hall as I'm about to leave school and says, "We're going out to have some fun tonight and you're coming along." "Okay. What are we doing," I ask. "Me, Noah, Brandi, and John are going bowling tonight." "So I'll be the fourth wheel?" Candace gives me a knowing smile. "I also invited the new guy, Garrett. I saw you two talking and it turns out him and Noah are friends." My eyes get big, but I smile back at her. I know it'll be fun, but I can't help but wish that Jace could come along. I tell her, "You know what? Let's do it. I need a fun night." "Great! We're meeting at 7:00 at Frames Bowling Lounge." I tell her that I'll see her there then I head home to start getting ready. I'm kind of excited about this, but I just can't get Jace out of my mind. I was deep in thought when I realized it was time to go. I call Michael and tell him I'm ready to head to the bowling alley. When I get there, everyone is already inside. Garrett is first to greet me with a hug and tells me that he's glad I came. "Me too! This should be fun. I'm a terrible bowler by the way." He laughs and says "Don't worry, we can put the bumpers up for you." I playfully shove him and say, "Shut up! I don't need bumpers." I give a round of hugs to everyone and we all get our shoes and head to our designated lane. Garrett thought it would be funny to have me go first, so I grab the ball, roll it down, and get a strike. I jump up and down in celebration. Garrett asks, "Did you just hustle me into thinking you suck at bowling?" "Beginners luck," I joke. "I actually haven't been bowling in six years." The game continues and we all have an amazing time. This is exactly what I needed; a night out with friends and some drama-free fun. We finish the game and I come in second place. Garrett wins of course. "Go ahead and gloat," I tell him. "Hey, you did very well. Better than I thought you would." I laugh and say, "Well next time I won't let you win." "Next time, huh?" "Well yeah, this was fun. You're a great friend; we definitely should do it again sometime." He pauses for a moment and say, "Yeah. I get it. I can tell you're not looking for a relationship at the moment so I don't mind just being friends." "Thank you, that's what I need right now." We all grab a bite to eat at the concession and sit down. Not long after, I get a text from Jace saying, "Are you on a triple date right now?" I text him back and say, "No, I am not on a triple date right now. I'm just hanging out with friends." He doesn't text me back. I hate this. I hate doing this to him. I care so much about him and it's killing me to not tell him the truth. So I text him back saying, "Can you meet me tonight? In private; somewhere no one will know we are meeting?" He texts back, "Yes, absolutely yes. Meet me at midnight at the Brooklyn Public Library." "See you there," I reply. We finish up right around midnight and I tell everyone goodbye. I reach the car and tell Micheal to head to the library. When we get there, Jace is already waiting. I tell him to get in the car and he gets in, but sits a few feet away from me. I don't like that. I look at him and say, "Jace, I'm so sorry. I've been lying to you, but I can't do it anymore. I can't go on like this so I have to tell you the truth." I start from the beginning and tell him everything about Jade and her blackmailing. He sits there in silence. Finally, he moves close and grabs my hand. "Mila, I can't believe she got ahold of the tape and is doing this to you. I don't want her and I don't understand why she can't get that. I will never be with her. Mila, I honestly thought you hated me." I squeeze his hand and say, "Jace, I could never hate you. You don't understand the pain I have been going through having to push you away like this." He asks, "Do you have feelings for Garrett?" "No, he's just a friend and I made that clear to him tonight. Jace, I don't know what to do. I hate staying away from you but I can't let Jade send that tape to Yale. I'm starting to think it's not worth it anymore. Maybe I should just let her send it then I can tell my side of the story. Maybe it won't affect me at all or maybe it will destroy everything I worked for. I'm just sick of Jade having all the power over me." "If she sends it, can you imagine what your dad would do to her? As I'm heading home, I get a text from Jade that says, "I warned you to stay away from Jace but you didn't listen. This is what you get." I click on the link that is attached. It's the sex tape uploaded to the Internet for the whole school go see. I can't breathe. I start having a panic attack as I'm calling Jace . He answers the phone and says, "Mila? Mila, talk to me. I just got the uplink. Are you okay? Where are you?" "I'm heading home. You can meet me there." "I'll be there as fast as I can." When I arrive home, Candace and Brandi are both outside of the house waiting for me. They run up to me with open arms. "I can't believe that bitch did this to you," Candace says. "What are you going to do, Mila," Brandi asks. "I don't know. I can't stop crying and having panic attacks." My father comes outside to see what all the commotion is about and says, "Oh my God, what the hell is going on?" Jace tells him what Jade did and my father comes to hug me tightly. "I am so sorry, Mila. Jade will not get away with this." The door opens again and Tracy walks out and asks what's going on. Jace tells her and she is furious. Next to come out is Jade. Tracy gets in Jade's face and asks, "Why in the hell did you do something like this? You can destroy her future. You can destroy your father's future. Did you even stop to think about that? I am so ashamed of you right now, Jade. I can't even look at you. The daughter I raised would have never done that." Tracy turns her back on her daughter, disgusted. My father looks at Jade and says, "You are grounded for a very long time. You are to go to school and come home. You're also cut off from your trust fund. You will not be attending any more campaign outings. You will not be attending formal or prom. You're lucky the police don't get involved and I really don't even know if they will or not. You released child pornography, Jade. Do you not understand how serious this is? I don't even know if I can protect you from this or even if I want to. What has Mila done to you that you felt the need to do this?" Jade stands there for a moment in silence. I think the reality of what she's done finally sinks in. "Jace was suppose to be mine. You even said so," she says to her mother. "That was in the past. A lot has changed since then, Jade. Mila is a part of this family and you have to accept that. If Jace chooses to be with her, then that is none of your concern. You will do whatever it takes to make this up to Mila. Do you understand, Jade?" "Yes, I understand," she says quietly. "I don't even know how I am going to show my face anywhere. The video is out for the whole school to see. How am I going to face anyone now?" Brandi grabs my hand and says, "With us by your side. We'll all ride together and walk through those doors together and we will shut down anyone that has something to say. We have your back." My father and Tracy try to go do as much damage control as they can. Jade storms off to her room without another word. I walk upstairs to see what she is up to and I can hear her on her phone. She's talking to Sarah, telling her the plan back fired. "We'll have to come up with a plan B," I hear her say. I can't believe that after all the trouble she just got into she would even be thinking about trying to pull something else with me. I'm starting to think that she will never give up until I lose Jace and she ruins my future. I don't know what to do about it. I know that I don't want to turn into a monster like her. I can't sink to her level, but I can't just sit back and let her destroy mine. I head back downstairs to see the girls and Jace and tell them what I overheard. "We are not going to let that happen. We'll figure something out, but she is not going to get away with doing anything else to you," Candace says. "I don't want to lose myself in this. I want to put an end to it, but I want to do it the right way. I'm a good person and I don't want to lose that." They agree and I say, "Let's just put an end to her shit once and for all."
