14. Look While I See - Stiles

I see Percy is in the crowd and rush up to put an arm around his shoulder, “ready for tonight, fishboy?”

Percy turns his head, and man, does the skin under his eyes get darker by the day. “Fishboy?”

“Yeah,” I grin, “cause you're basically half fish. How else do you swim so fast?” I pull one of his hands towards me and separate his fingers. They’re calloused. “I’m surprised there’s no webs between here.”

“That’s because I only need webbed fingers when I’m in water.” Percy turns his hand over in mine, “otherwise I look completely human.”

“So what I’m getting, is that you get webbed fingers and gills and probably a fin on your back, but only when you're in water?”

“Yep.”

“Awesome.” I let go of his hand, “be prepared to be sprayed with water guns all day.”

“That’d be war.”

“I hope you have a white flag then.”

Scott appears out of thin air. His hair is mussed at the front and dirt is on his knees and hands. “Never ever agree to do early morning runs with isaac. He saw a freaking cat and went after it like a dog or something. I had to tackle him to the ground to get him to stop.”

“You liked chasing him, don’t deny it. You’re literally a dog too.” I mutter, knowing he can hear it. Scott scowls at me. I smirk. “Okay, tonight, us three and Liam are going to the lake near Lydia’s old place. We’ll all meet at mine at 6.”

“Isn’t six early?”

“Not for this. The killer could go at any point, even during daylight. I wanna scope out the area beforehand too.” My tone is flat for once, completely serious, and I can see the effect it has on the other two. Both of them are listening with rapt attention, both leaning in slightly even as we push through the clustered halls. “Scott, tell Liam this and you can pick him up on the way to mine, alright?”

“Yeah.”

“Do we need to pick fishboy up, or is he good to walk?”

Percy laughs shortly, his eyes bright. “I can drive, actually.”

“Even better.” I decide. This is good, this is good.

There’s still a chance Percy is the killer (though I don’t believe it as much anymore) but at least one person in the pack has him in every class for the day. He’s in Scott and I’s science class, first period. Lydia’s Japanese and psychology class. And my maths class. No matter what, we shouldn’t have him out of our sight for more than five minutes each.

----

Percy is like a fish. Not just because he’s a quick swimmer, but because he’s slippery as fuck. Maths class has only been going for ten minutes and he’s already gone.

Either he’s taking his time in the toilet doing you know what, or …I lost him. And I’m hoping it’s the first option because I’d rather a student at school didn’t get killed and that I wasn’t wrong about Percy not being the killer.

I put my hand up and the teacher calls on me, “can I go to the bathroom?”

She barely nods her head and I’m out the door.

A guy walks out of the bathroom when I arrive and he stops me, “I’d find another bathroom. Someone put a glitter bomb in there." Then he walks away.

OK?

I push the door open. And stop.

Percy is standing by the sink, watching as the water from the tap rinses away blood. He looks tired, like normal, but in a restless way. Like he needs to either run a mile or sleep for a week.
