5. Apple Juice - Percy

I squirmed in my seat, feeling itchy. My leg was bouncing up and down wildly —I needed to move and sitting in a boring language class wasn’t helping. I could hardly understand English as it was. Did they really expect me to manage Japanese on top of that?

I glanced back up at the clock again. Five more minutes then school was over for the day. For the week too, then I’d be getting a ride back to camp for the weekend to hang out with my friends.

It’s a rare treat to go to half-blood hill, and I’m honestly surprised I’m allowed to go. I think my mum said yes because she’s not sure how many of my friends I’ll get to see after the war, and I admit, I’m worried too. I hope I see them all, and that they all survive. I want Kronos to die a miserable death, and Luke would be a good bonus but I know it'll hurt Annabeth majorly. Making him a good guy would be better, but I bet that’s stretching it too far for the Fates.

More importantly, I’m excited to see Annabeth. when I spoke with her last, she told me her and Grover would both be able to make it, leaving school and the search for Pan behind for a few days.

Mr Ko Sang continued speaking in a different language, his words all mumbled and jumbled together. I wonder if he can hear himself? I’m guessing not, from the expectant looks he’s giving us now.

Stiles throws his hand up, the teacher calls on him happily. “What did you say?”

"I said, pay attention. Two words I thought you'd heard in every language by this point," the teacher scowls and stomps back to sit behind his desk, head held in his hands.

No one says anything, no one really cares. I grab my bag in time with the bell and I'm out of my seat in seconds, pushing through the sea of students also in a rush to get out. I’m nearly at the door when someone pulls me back by the collar.

I struggled against them, swinging out an arm. They catch it, then push me onto an empty desk. Jackson leers over me, eyebrows drawn together angrily.

Danny sits on the teachers desk, since Mr Ko Sang is vacant at the moment. Great. Just great.

“You stole my juice didn’t you?” He growls.

My eyebrows fly up so quickly they could’ve flown straight off my face, because …what? “Your juice? What, like apple juice from the baby store?”

“Stop playing around, just tell me where it is and I won’t hurt you.” I guessed this guy had been bad, but beating up the new kid over fruit juice wasn’t something I expected.

“It’s in the school post box,” I admitted carefully, sliding off the desk and making my way to the door, “no one checks there so it was convenient.”

They let me leave without a scratch, and if it weren’t for the punching bag I was about to become when they figured out the truth, I would be looking forward to the next time I saw him. Fortunately, it was a Friday, so I had all weekend until I saw him again.

Once I was in the back parking lot of the school, I fished out a golden coin from my pocket and threw it on the gravel. It sizzled and popped for a moment before disappearing completely.

I raise my hands in an ‘o’ shape and say in greek, “Stêthi 'Ô hárma diabolês.” Which I remembered translates to ‘stop, Chariot of Damnation’.

Dark smoke curls out of the ground, rising upwards quickly into the shape of a black car. A side door bangs open and each of the old hags turn in their seats to look at him with matching grins. "Long time no see, boy."

The sisters dropped me off just outside the camp border about ten minutes later, leaving my ears ringing from all their yelling. The camp, opposed to Beacon Hill’s storms and hell bent rain, was brighter and noticeably less wet. There were few clouds in the sky and the sun was starting to sink beneath a honey-coloured sky.
