"Good Morning class. Please take your seats," Mrs. Clabourg told the class.
After I took a shower and changed, I had gone to the dining hall and ate a quick breakfast bar and milk, before going to the classroom. I thought I was late, but the teacher had also just arrived. I looked over to the empty desks. There was one in each corner of the room and in the middle, with some others in the very back which had been moved there, maybe this morning. So there were thirteen desks.
The middle desk was by Roman. I walked forward about to take the seat by him, but as I was going there, Fallon moved to occupy it. I looked at Roman who looked at me. He gave me an apologetic look and I just shrugged. I wasn't going to feel hurt about it...even when there was a slight pang in my chest.
"Hey Luna, you can sit by me." I turned my head toward Gabe who was sitting next to one of the empty desks at the back corner. I smiled and walked towards him.
Once I sat, I turned my head to him. "Thank you for inviting me to sit next to you."
He looked back to me and smiled. "It's no problem. I saw you were going to sit by Roman, but I thought since me and him are twins, you wouldn't mind wanting to sit by me."
I thought about what he just said. What was he trying to say? I mean I think he was trying to tell me that it was obvious that I was interested in sitting by Roman, but hoping that I wouldn't mind sitting by him. They were twins, so why was I slightly bothered by the fact that I couldn't sit by Roman and Fallon was in the seat that I was going to sit in? I obviously didn't want to tell Gabe that, so I replied to him with something that I knew was better. "No, of course not...I would have sat with you regardless but I saw Roman first and just thought I would sit next to him."
It seemed like he bought it and smiled as he averted his eyes back to the front. Mrs. Clabourg was writing something on the white board. I just then noticed that Muriel was sitting right in front of me. I taped on her shoulder. She turned around instantly.
"Hi, I said giving her a friendly smile which she returned.
"Hey," She said back.
"Luna." I heard my name being called. I looked up to find Mrs. Clabourg looking at me intently. "I'm glad that you are making friends, but would you want to come up here and tell the others a little bit about yourself before I ask Fallon to do the same?" I nodded, standing up from my chair and walking to the front.
What could I say that would be interesting to them? I shifted my body to face the class. There were so many faces. They all were looking very genuine and kind. I smiled to the class which they returned gladly.
"Hi, I'm Luna but you already know that...I'm seventeen years old and my birthday is not too far away. I have lived in many states, which means I have been to many orphanages. I hope to help people one day, but I'm not too sure what occupation I'm looking for. I love the color blue and have a thing for animals. I'm really nice, but I could be really quiet. The only way you can get me to talk is if you talk to me...I don't play any sports but I like running. And that's basically about it. I can't think of anything more to say..." I shifted from one foot to the other. That was probably the lamest thing you could tell people that just met you.
I looked back to Mrs. Calbourg who was smiling kindly. "Thank you Luna. You can stand to the side while Fallon tells up a little about her and then the class will tell you their names." I nodded and made some room for the approaching Fallon.
As always, Fallon didn't look appropriate with what she was wearing, and it was like she didn't realize that this was a place that was freezing. Who wore denim shorts and a crop top? It didn't make any sense to me. The other teens wore things that weren't suited for winter either, but they still were more covered than Fallon was.
