CHAPTER THIRTY ! past experiments gone right.

" WHY the long face?" tony asks, parking the car in front of the avengers compound. mckenna looks over from the passenger seat, a small stuffed bear on her lap. "let me guess he turned into a baby," tony assumes.

steve nods, "among other things, yeah. what are you two doing here?" he asks, his brooklyn accent coming through.

"it's the epr paradox," tony says, as he opens the car door and gets out, "instead of pushing lang through time, you might've wound up pushing time through lang. it's tricky, dangerous. somebody could have cautioned you against it."

mckenna walks towards the two, the sound of her converse walking against the concrete, "you did it," steve replies.

tony turns from looking towards mckenna, to looking to steve, "oh did i?" he asks, shocked, "well, thank god i'm here. regardless, i fixed it," he states, bringing the invention that is around his hand.

mckenna brings her hand up, and scrunches her eyebrows, "you fixed it? i believe it was a joint effort," she says, smirking sarcastically.

"regardless that, a fully functioning time-space gps," tony says, dismissing the contesting of mckenna, "i just want peace. turns out resentment is corrosive, and i hate it. and mckenna didn't give me much of a choice."

mckenna shrugs at the statement, "suck it up old man, we got work to do," she states, smiling, and patting tony on the back, as she walks towards the doors into the compound, going straight to the lab, "why hello my favorite people! now let's get to work."

" SHE doesn't even fully know about peter," tony says, scrunching his eyes together.

"tony," steve replies, his face mirroring tony's.

mckenna walks into the lab, from the hallway where she was eavesdropping from, "what about him?" she asks, her voice breaking.

the two men's head turn quickly towards the red head who appeared in the room, "nothing mckenna. nothing to worry about," tony states quickly.

scott clears his throat, as he leans on the doorframe, "they're back," he says, not trying to make things any worse.

mckenna turns and walks out of the glass office, and to the computers in front of an incomplete time machine.

"alright clint," halk says, pressing buttons, "we're going in three, two, one." clint gets sucked into the machine, an aura of orange surrounding where his body was.

mckenna types code into a computer, as she reads clint's vitals from where he went in the past, "he's stable. his heart rate is high but i'm gonna hope that that's normal," she says, shaking her head slightly.

clint comes back on the machine, crouching over on his hands and knees. natasha. tony, scott, mckenna, and rocket run up to him. "hey. hey, look at me," natasha says, holding his face, "you okay?"

mckenna runs up to his side, running a test scan on her ipad that's connected to the suit.

clint nods towards natasha, "yeah. yeah," he hands her a baseball glove, "it worked. it worked," he says as he throws the glove to tony.

" SO the how works. now we just got to figure out the when and the where. almost everyone in this room has had an encounter with at least one of the six infinity stones," steve says, looking around the room at the left avengers.

"or substitute the word "encounter" for "damn near killed"," tony states.

mckenna nods her head, "or experimented on," everyone looks at her with concern in their eyes, "oh just me? okay never mind."

"we only have enough pym particles for one round trip each. and these stones have been in a lot of different places throughout history," hulk says, pacing around.

"our history," tony states, as he paces the opposite way, "so, not a lot of convenient spots to just drop in, yeah?"

" OKAY so in what was that? 2008? i don't know," mckenna rants, pacing in front of a hologram screen of the mind stone, and the power stone. "these stones were in hydra's possession. i know that because, i was tested on by them," she states pointing at the purple stone.

steve nods as natasha writes down something, "and where was that kens?" she asks.

mckenna hums for a second, "uhhh, i wanna say germany, but i could be wrong. i don't know they transferred me all the time," she replies, trying her hardest to remember.

"okay so who's going with mckenna to hydra?" steve asks.

natasha looks through her list and is baffled, "steve everyone already has a teammate, there isn't anyone else open to go," she states.

steve shakes his head, "i'll go with her," he replies.

mckenna shakes her head, "steve it's dangerous. the name steve rogers was forbidden down there, let alone you coming with me. at least i know exactly where to go and what not to do. i got this," she says.

steve sighs, "okay. but if this works, and we can bring everyone back. don't let bucky know that i let you do this by yourself," steve pleads, laughing slightly.

"no promises. i may need blackmail," she responds dryly laughing.

" ALL right. we have a plan. six stones, four teams, one shot," steve says, "five years ago we lost. all of us. we lost friends, we lost family, we lost a part of ourselves. today, we have a chance to take it all back. you know your teams. you know your missions. get the stones. get them back. one round-trip each. no mistakes, no do overs. most of us are going somewhere we know. that doesn't mean we should know what to expect. be careful. look out for eachother. this is the fight of our lives, and we're gonna win. whatever it takes. good luck," steve says, putting his fit up for the group to all collectively fist bump eachother.

"he's pretty good at that," rocket says looking up at mckenna.

mckenna nods, "yes he is."

"alright you heard the man. stroke those keys jolly green," tony says, as hulk presses buttons for the time machine.

they all stand in a circle around the outer edge of the machine.

natasha looks around at her team smiling, "see ya in a minute."
