I slipped in my AirPods for my morning walk, making sure to leave some food out for our energetic dog, Roxy. Living with my older sisters Lila, 23, and Nessa, 21, usually makes for lively mornings. The upcoming wedding of our older brother, Jack, who's 25 and tying the knot with Lila's former best friend Gemma, adds another layer of drama to our household. Lila's not taking it well; she blew up when she found out about Jack and Gemma, swearing she'd never want to see her again. I doubt she'll even attend the wedding. But knowing our mother's penchant for high-profile events, she'll probably strong-arm Lila into going.

My lifelong best friend, Helena, the same age as me, has been a constant in my life since we were babies. She's my rock through thick and thin.

"No! Roxy, come back!" I dashed after our excitable pup, cursing under my breath as she bolted into the neighbor's yard—again. That hole in the fence seriously needs fixing. "Roxy!" I whistled frantically, resigning myself to walking through the gap and wrangling her back. But just as I gently nudged Roxy back through the hole, she dashed past me, leaping onto the figure behind me. His head was down, fussing over her.

"Sorry about he—" I stopped short, realizing who was behind me, the last person I ever wanted to encounter again. "Oh, hi Hal," my ex awkwardly greeted me. Hal, the nickname he coined for me. Did he choose it because he knew I loved it? "Hi Archie," I ground out through clenched teeth. "C'mon, Rox," I muttered, urging the dog to return to our yard.

"You live next door?" Archie's question hung in the air. "Stalker," I scoffed, unable to mask my irritation. "Same old Hailey," Archie smirked, unfazed. "Anyways, the last thing I want is to catch up with my ex in my neighbor's backyard." With that, I grabbed Roxy's collar and retreated indoors. "I am your neighbor, Hal," I could practically hear the smugness in his voice.

Archie always seemed to be one step ahead, if not a million. Perfect in every way, from his smile to his hair. I shook off the encounter and hurried back inside before he could say anything else.

"Guess who just moved next door," I announced to my sisters. "Umm, Jake?" Nessa hazarded a guess. "No, Archie!" I whispered urgently, in case he overheard. Lila nearly spit out her water. "Huh?!" she gasped. "What!" Nessa exclaimed in disbelief. "You're joking," they both said in unison. "I wish I was," I muttered.

"I'm speechless," Nessa's eyes widened. "That's one way to put it," I replied, grabbing my keys. "I'm going for a walk. Bye." With that, I headed out, quickly texting Helena to share the latest development.
