Helena's Dad got footy tickets but couldn't make it, he and a mate were meant to go but he gave them to Helena and I instead. Helena used to watch footy, but stopped when Archie and I broke up. Archie used to always watch footy, and I watched it with him. Every game, Archie watched. His dream was to make it to the AFL, wonder how that's going.
I don't know any of the new players, only ones that have been playing from when I was with Archie. Helena and I always used to talk about games together but I just couldn't watch another game after breaking up with Archie. So many emotions would just wash over me. But, it's been a while and I know I can't let something silly like that stop me from watching my favourite sport.
... (at the game)
"Here they come." Helena pulled out her phone as the Essendon song played. "No fucking way." I gasped. "What?" Helena tried to look at where my eyes were. She then widened her eyes and covered her mouth. "How the fuck- what!?" She looked at me. "My ex, who moved in next door, is now here. On the field - playing." I tried to process whatever I was seeing right now. "Is this a dream?" I pinched myself. "No. It isn't." Helena, still shocked, replied.
... The game had just finished as Essendon had beat the other team. Archie was walking over towards the section I was in then he stopped and looked at me. His mouth slightly opened and he shook his head as he walked off. He handed a footy to a little kid and took a photo with him then high-fived the fans.
He grabbed another footy and wrote something. He read it then headed over to me and handed the footy to me. He smiled then walked off. It read, '04********, text me'. I looked at Helena and gasped. She read it over my shoulder and her eyes widened. "Oh." Was what all I managed to say.
"Are you gonna message him?" She turned to me. "I- I don't know." I shrugged. "What does he want?" I asked her. "Honestly, I have no clue." She replied. "Do you want to message him?" She questioned. "I-" "Yes or no." She cut me off. "Yeah." I mumbled.
"Well, Hailey, you gotta figure this out yourself. I don't want to make a decision for you then you end up regretting it." Helena sighed. "I'll sleep on it." I suggested. "Yeah, maybe that's a good decision." Helena agreed. "What a night." I shook my head. "Tell me about it." She chuckled as we exited the MCG.
