Alexis was awakened by her alarm early in the morning, with her mind still groggy, she reached for her phone on the nightstand and switched the alarm off. She said her prayers before getting out of bed walking to the kitchen and got a glass of water. It was only day three in internal medicine rotation and the hours were anything between 10-12 a day. 

Stepping out of the shower, she wrapped herself in a plush towel and made her way to her bedroom. She got dressed and applied a touch of makeup to enhance her natural features. A swipe of mascara to define her lashes, a hint of blush and a subtle lip gloss to complete the look. She moved around packing her bag, got herself some fruits and a protein bar. Her apartment was about a fifteen minute drive from the hospital.

While driving, she dialled Stephen's number with her phone connected via bluetooth. As the phone rang, she couldn't help but feel a little sad because she missed him. Finally, Stephen's voice came through the car, "Hey, babe! Good morning!"

A smile spread across her face as she replied, "Morning superstar, or should I say afternoon"

''Definitely afternoon, you own your way to the hospital?"

"Yep"

"Arent you supposed to be on call duty tonight"

"Only tommorrow, I'm on a Q4 schedule"

"So is it different from your typical days? Besides you spending the night there" 

"Yeah because we get to be more hands on, we will be responsible for every patient currently admitted to the Internal Medicine wards. We will also be admitting all patients from the emergency department into IM, getting a full history and physical exam for new patients, updating patients chart including plans for treatment and presenting all that to our residents"

"And you got to stay up for a whole what, 20 hours?

"Its what I signed up for, so hows your day?"

"My day has been cool, we have a day off so me and a few guys decided to explore the city earlier. It was a cool experience, now we just chilling talkin a lot of bs"

"Well at least one of us is having some fun, I am kind of jealous"

"Its not as fun without you here anywhere" Stephen's voice softened. "I mis you so much you don't even understand, am sure the guys think I am obsessed with you"

Alexis couldn't help but smile even more upon hearing Stephen's words. "I miss you too, and if you must know, I am obsessed with you too because I stopped by your place yesterday, stole two hoodies just so I could get a scent of you"

Stephen chuckled "I can't believe you did that, I thought I was the only one"

"Well, your hoodies are the next best thing when I want you to hug me when I start getting in my head a little bit"

"I am sorry I can't be there to hug you. But remember, you're doing incredible things, making a difference in people's lives every day"

"Thank you, it means a lot to hear you say that because sometimes, I question if I'm doing the right thing"

"You absolutely are doing the right thing Lex and I'm proud of you, I can't wait to hear about all the lives you're touching when I get back and trust me, I am counting down the days."

At this point, Alexis was getting teary as she pulled up at the parking. "You always know how to make me feel better, even from miles away"

Stephen's voice softened as he responded, "And you better get used to it"

Alexis smiled again "Thank you baby. I am at the hospital now so I gotta say bye now"

"Okay, have a great day and break a leg. I love you"
