TO BE COMPLETELY HONEST, the day had gone as a blur for Ekaterina. She was unsure how she had ended up where she was, beside Conrad on the side of a lake, but she didn't hate it. She enjoyed his company, yet saying such a thing would only boost his ego.

EARLIER THAT DAY

After leaving Dr. Pravesh and Dr. Brown, EK walked outside of the hospital to get a breath of fresh air. She hadn't even been there half an hour and already couldn't take it. People looked at her weirdly (for the record, they knew something was off and Rina was one to never really show emotions at work).

She quickly sat on a bench, taking her phone out of her coat. 9:46 was the exact time. Upon opening her phone, she quickly opened a specific album in her camera roll. Gabe.

She shuffled through the pictures, taking time to admire each one of them. His smile was certainly irreplaceable. As bring as the sun. A tear rolled down her cheek as she rapidly closed her phone and stared at the single tree in front of her.

"Kind of sad, you know, that they only planted one tree here?" A very familiar voice asked. "They probably spend more money on fixing HODAD's mistakes, though," that same voice finished.

That comment made EK chuckled and smile for the first time that day.

"May I sit?" Conrad requested, though he was already in the midst of sitting down as he asked.

"Well, I guess yes," she laughed, turning to face him.

"What's bringing you down? You're never this sad."

"Correction, I'm this sad in front of you. I have human emotions, Conrad. And second of all, why would I tell you why I'm sad?" She corrected him, fiddling with the hem of her shirt.

"Because I'm your best friend in the whole wide world!" He responded, quickly hugging her. "BFF's forever!" Conrad shouted, some would say like a little girl.

And she chuckled again. It never mattered how sad she was, Conrad could make her smile. That's why they were close friends, to her eyes.

To Conrad? He really, really liked that girl. Beyond making him smile and laugh, she was organized, smart and always there for him. He wanted them to be more, but he had never seen her with a boyfriend so he assumed she didn't want one. Oh, and he was fucking terrified to ask her out. People really made him terrified, but oh boy did she.

"So?" He more or less demanded, shooting her puppy dog eyes.

"No."
