Prologue

"Marlene?" "Good you're up."

Marlene said as I sat up in the dusty hospital bed. "Where's Joel and Ellie?"

I questioned Marlene as I got up from the bed, "Joel is down the hall, and Ellie, she's getting prepped for surgery."

"Surgery? Why?" I asked, confused as I stepped closer to her. 'The doctor ran some tests and believes he can make a vaccine from her."

"Aren't Cordyceps in the brain?" I questioned. "Yes, they are." Marlene said with a sadness.

"Can't that kill her?" I questioned with wide eyes. Marlene was silent as she looked at me.

"Why are you sending her to surgery? She's going to die!" I yelled as I shoved her. "You think I want this?"

"You're the one that's sending her!" I yelled again as two Fireflies held me back.

"Let her go," Marlene said while gesturing with her fingers. "I don't like this as much as you do, but she's the cure. We can change humanity as we know it."

"By killing her!" I yelled. "You told me that you made a promise to my mom to keep us alive. And here you are sending Ellie to her death!"

I yelled, taking a step closer to her, now face to face with her.

"Your mom would understand, and Ellie, she would want this."

"No, you're not doing this. I'll fucking kill you before you do! " I yelled, before spitting in her face. "Take her away, and the smallest move she makes kill her."

"Kill her?" the young Firefly of the two questioned. "She's been traveling with Joel, and if I know her at all then I know she picked up a few tricks from Joel."

Marlene said, as she walked away.

"Come on let's go." The older Firefly said, as he shoved me out the door. "Where's Joel?"

I asked, as they continued to shove me down the hallway. "If you shut the fuck up maybe you'll see him."

The man said harshly, we walked for a few more steps until we came across another Firefly, and someone in front of them.

"Joel?" I questioned, seeing him turn around and look me in the face. "Bella."

He said before glancing at the staircase and back at me.

"What's the hold up?" He yelled, "sorry."

I said lightly, "no you're not." The Firefly said, before yelling at the fireflies that held Joel to continue walking.

Joel took this as his opportunity, turning around and hitting the guy in the head with his elbow and grabbing his gun and shooting the rest of the Fireflies.

"Are you okay?" Joel asked me as he held my shoulders. "Ellie." I said not worrying about me.

Joel nodded his head as we grabbed our packs.

"On your left Joel!" I yelled, as he shot the person.

After that shot it was like everything was silent, the only sound was Joel shooting, and every once in a while my shot.

"Joel!" I yelled as a man came after him. Joel reached for the man, shoving him against the wall, and pointing the gun at his crotch.

"Where is the operating room?" Joel asked, with anger. "I ain't got time for this." He said as he shot once. "Where?"

He asked again the man still not answering. "Where!" He yelled this time. "Top floor...the far end." The man muttered as Joel pulled away, and the man dropped to the floor. Joel then rested the barrel of the gun on the man's head before shooting.
