"Hey, what are you doing out here?" one of the guards said, catching sight of me. I rolled my eyes, my nerves on edge as I approached him. Without hesitation, I uttered the word, "Boom." Before he could react, I touched him with my finger, watching as his eyes drooped and he collapsed to the ground, asleep.

Before the other guard could reach out to detain me, I repeated the process, leaving him slumbering on the floor. The spell was designed not only to make them fall asleep but also to erase their memory of our encounter, ensuring my disguise remained intact. With a quick glance around to ensure no one else was nearby, I continued down the hallway, avoiding patrolling guards with practiced ease.

Soon, I reached the entrance to the King's royal quarters, also referred to as the upper wing, where two guards stood sentry. I knew I needed to distract them to slip past unnoticed. With a flick of my wrist, I cast a simple spell, creating a faint commotion at the end of the hall.

"Who's there?" one of the guards called out, his attention drawn away from his post. When no response came, he exchanged a glance with his companion before setting off to investigate the disturbance, leaving the other momentarily alone.

Seizing the opportunity, I darted past the distracted guard and slipped through the entrance to the royal quarters. The hallway beyond was silent, the only sound was the soft padding of my footsteps on the plush carpet.

I moved quickly, my senses alert for any sign of danger. But as I traversed the empty corridor, a faint murmur reached my ears, drawing me toward one of the nearby rooms.

I crept closer, my heart pounding in my chest as I pressed my ear against the door, straining to catch the voices within. It sounded like a discussion, but I couldn't make out the words.

Just as I reached for the door handle, a voice cut through the silence behind me, sending a shiver down my spine.

"You're in deep trouble, young lady."

I spun around to face the speaker, my eyes widening in alarm as I took in the sight of an older woman standing before me. Judging by her regal attire, I could tell she was of high rank, likely a member of the royal family or someone close to the king.

Her gaze was sharp, her expression stern as she glared at me with undisguised suspicion. Instinctively, I reached for my magic, ready to defend myself if necessary, but I knew I would be risking a lot.

But before I could react, she moved with lightning speed, seizing me by the arm with surprising strength. I struggled against her grip, but she held fast, her fingers digging into my flesh.

"Who are you, and what are you doing here?" she demanded, her voice cold and commanding.

"I am the second in command mistress, I came to find him as I have something of importance to discuss with him," I said.

Her eyes narrowed, and for a moment, I thought she might strike me. But then, to my surprise, a flicker of amusement crossed her features, softening the edges of her expression.

"You've got guts, I'll give you that," she conceded, her grip loosening slightly on my arm. "Killian has no mistresses. I could take you in there, but it would be off with your head, hound lady. You're a spy in a maid's uniform," she added.

Just as I was about to defend myself with one of my spells, the door opened, and Killian came into view. He looked as regal as ever as he stared at us. The woman smirked at me as she said.

"Just in time, I found this one sneaking around the hallway and she said she was looking for you."

I wanted to point out to her that I wasn't looking for Killian, but before I could respond, Killian interrupted.

"Let her go, Amelia," he commanded.

Without argument, she let me go, and I could see as they stared at each other with weirdly intense eyes. Nothing needed to tell me what they were doing. I have lived long enough with a few wolves here to know they were mindlinking, a special ability of wolves to talk to each other through their minds. I could see as the woman, whose name I have come to know as Amelia, changed from surprise to something else.

She turned and looked at me in shock, and I couldn't tell why. Whatever Killian must have said must have shocked her.

"Amelia from now on will be in charge of all your affairs and training," Killian said to me. As I looked at him in confusion, I wanted to ask him what training, but I knew Killian. He never gives a straight answer, and I was right. As soon as the words left his lips, he excused himself, leaving me in the hands of the smirking old lady.
