Coriolanus continues to patrol as a Peacekeeper, studying to raise in the ranks as an Officer. He plays with the idea of suicide due to the dull, mind numbing days of work without much reward, when Sejanus comes to the rescue.
Mercedes has received his letter 2 weeks after he left the Capitol and can only find the wrong words to say. She herself has been given a promotion having less and less time for anything other than work. The disconnect between the two leaves her reaching out to others for comfort and alcohol to cope. Tigris spends less time with her claiming she needs to save more money and spend more time with Grandma'am, who is still in shock from Coriolanus leaving.
Coriolanus updates Mercedes daily nonetheless, still promising his heart and future if she responds. He and his fellow peacekeepers visit The Hob on the weekends paying for alcohol and donations to the band by selling baked goods Sejanus' Ma makes for them. He meets Lucy Gray and struggles with the internal battle of moving on from Mecerdes due to feeling close to his songbird again.
