Fern P.O.V.
Finally.
Back home, where it's safe. From shoes, birds, and most of all, that boy.
I greet mama with a croak when I see her. She is resting atop a dark green lily pad.
I croak a short song, a song that says, "Hi!" I get lots of instant replies. The same song, repeated so many times in so many different voices, is music to my ears.
I bound from the hilltop, splashing in the cool, clear water. I swim up to the surface and climb atop a bright green lily pad behind Mama's back.
Mama's talking. To Greg.
I hate Greg.
Ever since Papa got taken, Mama has been lonely. In desperate attempts to cheer her up, I found Greg and introduced him to Mama. Now she's forgotten Papa.
At least she hasn't noticed me.
But Greg has.
He saw me jump in, he saw me leave. He knows everything. But he won't tell.
He knows I hate him, but he doesn't hate me.
I don't know why.
I greet Mama with a quiet croak, she barely hears me. She turns quickly and asks me what I want. I ask, with a sarcastic tone in my voice, "What's for dinner?" I know the answer. Mosquitos. It's always mosquitos.
Never cheese.
No, no why would we ever have cheese?
