I walk through the front door of my house and see a 'happy birthday' banner hanging up. As I continue into the house there are balloons around and a gift on the counter in the kitchen.

Today is August 1st. Our birthday. Mine and Melanie's. Now I share the day alone.

"Happy birthday!" My parents run into the kitchen and tackle me into a hug. I can't help but laugh and feel joy with them. "We got you a cake." Dad says sounding very happy. "Thank you both." I tell them knowing it must be really hard for them to be happy. This is after all their dead daughter's birthday too.

"Can we eat it later?" I ask. "Of course take your time. Aubrielle will be over later for dinner with us." Mom tells me and kisses my head. "Okay, I'll be back soon." I tell them and head to my room.

I walk up to the door to my room this time staring at the twin 1 sign on my door for a moment. I was born eighteen seconds before my sister.

I leave my bag in front of my door and walk to Mel's room. Her room is right beside me with a twin 2 sign on her door. I remember when Dad made these for us as a seventh birthday gift. Mine is light blue and hers is yellow.

I open the door feeling the draft come at me from inside. The room is just like the last day I slept in here just a couple of months ago. I only lost my twin in January. I slept in here till the end of May. I just couldn't leave. It was the only place I felt like I could feel her

I enter the room and walk around running my hand along the furniture just feeling it and it's almost like she's touching me back.

I still remember the accident clearly. It was a cold Saturday in January and we were out at the lake.

"Esme come over here!" Mel shouts at me as I sit in the snow by the lake. It's freezing today and Mel wanted to come play hockey on the ice and of course, I agreed. This is my last chance to get to do these things with her. Come September Mel may not be going to the same college as me. She wants to go to Chicago.

That's so far and I'll miss her so I'm taking all the opportunities but right now I'm freezing. "Mel it's cold!" I shout back. "Oh come on Elsa get out here." She says as she skates closer. We've always agreed I was Elsa and she was Anna since seeing Frozen. It's our favorite movie. When I don't move Mel starts singing ' Do you want to build a snowman' from the movie and skating in circles.

I can't help but smile my sister is such a light. She comes over and grabs my hand pulling me out onto the ice and we skate together singing. "See fun." She says as we stop the song. "You're ridiculous." I laugh. "Maybe but I'm your twin." Mel begins to skate backward. Mel's light brown hair starts to glisten as snow falls more from the sky. "Maybe we should go inside!" I tell a little since she's almost on the other side of the lake. I start to skate to her so we could go together.
