The night was dead silent - cold air chilling to the bone. A carriage broke through the night. The horse's hooves made contact with the stone ground, the only noise echoing throughout the town. It rolled to a stop in front of a dark alleyway.

A man dressed in black hopped off from the driver's seat. He moved with a smooth gait, his stature was straight and his hair neatly groomed. He opened the door to the carriage, holding out his hand for his master. The boy of only twelve held a cane beside him, taking the butler's hand as he descended to the ground.

"Let's make this quick. I want to make it back in time for dinner." The butler bowed. "Yes, My Lord." The boy walked, steady on his feet as his butler accompanied him from behind. They approached the darkness. "Sebastian." The boy whispered to his butler who stood at attendance. "Yes, it's unusually dark." They stared into the black abyss. The shadows bounced irregularly off the buildings, the ground barely visible beneath their feet and the moonlight refused to reach the roofs edge.

"Bring a lantern, Sebastian." "Yes, My Lord." Sebastian took an empty lantern from the carriage. He lit a match and returned to his master's side who was examining the shadows edge. "Is there something wrong, bocchan?" His master waved his hand in denial. "Let's go." His master entered the alleyway then suddenly stepped back. "Sebastian, light the way." The boy exhaled, testing the visibility of his breath. It was unusually cold beyond the boundary of the shadows. "Yes, My Lord." Sebastian entered the shadows, the fire in the lantern flickering. A wind came from the end of the alleyway, diminishing the only light source.

"It seems there is someone at the end of the alleyway." The young Earl raised an eyebrow. "Someone?" "A demon, I suspect." The boy's eyes widened, only one could be seen as the other was hidden behind an eyepatch. "Do you know who?" "No, that is the only thing I sense, it doesn't want to be seen." The boy approached the darkness only for his butler to hold an arm out, blocking his way. "I suggest we go home right away master, this threat will take longer to deal with. We will be late for dinner." The boy was about to argue with his butler until he met his gaze. "I strongly suggest we leave." The boy contemplated this for a while then turned around, walking back to the carriage. "Let's go home, Sebastian."

Two yellow eyes glowed in the darkness, watching as the Earl and his butler leave the alleyway, their horse's hooves fading into the night. "Essence, let's go." "Yes, My Lady."

Well, hope you've enjoyed it so far. You may notice that it's quite formal. Don't worry, it will become less stiff as I write it. It will get more interesting in later chapters, promise. Please note that there will be romance evolved later on, so it strays from the mystery genre, haha. Thanks for reading!
