Strong is Marianna James. Mari is a fighter. She is of Doe-James descent, and she will not go down without an uphill battle.

These were the thoughts that hung in the breeze and in the psyches of all in Birmingham, including the peaky blinkers, the Shelby family, Tia, and Diego, whilst they awaited for her to arise just alright following the shooting, or so they wished for.

The air was thick with tangible agony as Marianna's gushing body was taken into the hospital's emergency room. Doctors and nurses hurried quickly, their faces marked with worry and apprehension as they faced the unstoppable flow of destiny.

Tommy stood in the waiting room, his heart heavy with dread, his mind racing with endless recollections of shared times with Marianna, the past, the present, and his hoped-for future with her, all hanging by a thread.

Each second felt like an eternity as he begged hard for a miracle, some light of hope in the face of crushing sorrow. Not that Tommy prays much—in fact, he never does—but on this certain event, he did. He prays for no one in particular, but desires somebody is listening to him.

The hours passed by, with only the soft murmurs of concerned loved ones and the steady droning of machinery to signify each minute. Diego had been shedding quiet tears. Polly chosen to remain beside Tommy. While John, and Arthur, ignoring their spouses' wishes for them to return home also stayed. Why should they go? Marianna is their princess; they will not leave her side until the end.

Louis had gone out to make a phone call. The gentleman feels guilty considering that he pledged to take care of Marianna yet failed to fulfil his promise so.

Tommy paced restlessly, his thoughts consumed by the fear of what the future might hold without Marianna by his side.

Grace Shelby stood by the side, shaking; she couldn't sit, as though the discomfort of standing on her heeled shoes might bring consolation to what Marianna did for her midst the betrayal she did to her.

Finally, a weary-looking doctor emerged from the operating room, his expression grave as he called for the guardian of the patient. Diego instantly stood up, yet Tommy had scrambled ahead of him.

Everyone held their breath, and the air seemed to pause as the words spoken daggered into each of their hearts, shattering any lingering hopes of a miracle.
