They got up early morning. It was raining hard with thunder and lighting. They have to wait for a while to go into town. John got dress and Hope started to get breakfast on the table. But still Hope was figuring out her aunt's mystery. Why she hid this mystery from her? The phone rang. Hope went over to answer it. It was her father.
"Hope I'm going to over there. I need to talk to you in person. I'll be there about three days." said Mr. Brooks."Ok dad I'll be waiting." Hope hangs up the phone. John came down the stairs."John that was my father, he will be arriving in three days because he needs to talk me." said Hope with a concerned face. "Do you know what he wanted?" asked John."No I don't but when you meet him please try not to give him the impression about us. I don't want him to know how we feel for each other." Hope said. "I understand. I will be silent for now." said John. They finished having breakfast. The rain kept coming faster soon it will be flooded outside so it will impossible to leave. Hope washes up the dishes and went to the living room. She started to clean the furniture. John went to the bedrooms to clean up for the arrival of Hope's father. The storm was nasty and the lights were blinking on and off. They may not able to leave. Hope was just staring out of the window. John came into the room."Hope come here. I found a door leading to some stairs. It might be an attic." said Johnalmost trip over some buckets on the floor. Hope followed him back inside of the house. They walk up the stairs and there was a small door. It was open. They went inside. It was a dark and muggy small room. Hope look for a light switch. They found old furniture and all kinds of items. In the corner there was a small chest. Hope opened it. It had old clothes and papers. She dig deeper and found a diary. It might be her aunt's."John this must have belong to my aunt. It dates back to the 40's. Can it be her diary when she was young? Maybe it has the answers?" said Hope while looking at the diary with curiously. "Should I read it?" John just looks at her."Hope it is up to you to read it I'll leave you alone." as John left the room.
Hope opens the first page. It was dated on October 13, 1944. It reads:
He came by today. Mother was at work. I want to be with him all the time. If mother knew she will sent me away. I couldn't bare it. I love him so much. I don't know what to do.
Hope continued to read on. The pages kept on about a boy. How she loves him so much and how they were sneaking around. She turns to a page said:
Mother almost caught us. We were at the pond. We talk about the future. I wanted tell my mother but she will disapprove because we are young. That we are just two
fourteen year olds and we don't know about love. I love Billy.
Hope found a clue. His name was Billy. But, there was no last name. Hope left the room and took the book with her. It was getting late. She had to start supper. John was asleep on the couch. Hope woke him up."Hope was up?" ask John trying to open his eyes."Well, John this book mentions about a love affair. It mentions my aunt and a young boy; only mention his first name Billy. She was afraid to tell her mother about them." as Hope was preparing for dinner."Just imagine how scare you are not telling about the person you love.""Are you saying that I'm scare to tell my father about us?" "No, Hope I'm saying that your aunt was scare because she was just fourteen. That's all!""Ok John. At least there is a name to start with. Later, I will continue reading the rest of the book."They continue finishing their dinner. The storm seems to die out. Maybe they can leave in the morning for find out of any death records. "John let us not fight. I'm just so excited about the diary and my father is coming in couple of days." said Hope. "Alright, I just finish up with the dishes. If you want to continue to read, I'll leave you alone." John was finishing up and cleaning the dishes. Hope lock up the doors and shut the windows due it was kind of cold. Tonight was different because Hope believes she will find the answers. "Goodnight Hope." said John while leaving upstairs.
"Oh goodnight." answered Hope.
