Chapter 35: You have to fight
Hailey's POV
I nervously pull my hair up into a ponytail, making sure to remove any strand of hair that might irritate me in the ring. I scan my face in the mirror, noticing just how the girl staring back at me is not happy right now. I even have dark circles under my eyes, but I don't care enough to try and hide them with make-up.
To say I'm not having regrets about tonight would be a lie. I feel like a fool for doing this, for not allowing those who care about me to help me escape this trap I've allowed myself to get caught up in. But each time I think of how I could have just Tristan to sort this mess out, my heart becomes heavy as I remember how I have actually put my loved ones in danger. I know that this whole ordeal is not my fault, but I feel as though it's my responsibility to ensure that it ends.
A knock on the door brings me back to reality and my voice comes out soft as I give the anonymous person permission to enter my reserved changing room. I almost want to punch the life of the person entering once I see who it is.
"You've made a brave decision." Luther walks across the room to stand right behind my chair, before placing both his rough hands on either side of my bare shoulders. I try to shake his hands off, but that only makes him harden his grip and devilishly smile at me through the mirror.
I hate this man.
"Well, you better keep your end of the bargain and let my mother go." I say though gritted teeth and glare at him through the mirror.
"Hush now, dear child," he pats my head as though I'm a child. "I told you I'll let her go once I am done with her. Besides, let's just focus on one thing at a time, okay?" He then straightens his posture before pushing back the sleeve of his well tailored suit jacket to glance at his expensive wrist watch. "It's almost time to get this show on the road." He makes his way to the door. "And don't disappointment me because someone's like is at stake here." And he leaves me with a wink before slamming the door behind him.
"Do I ever catch a break?!" I shout at the mirror, angry that this is my bitter reality.
"You can't go in there man!" In a matter of a few minutes, I hear a man shout at someone outside my door, followed by some shuffling noises and a painful groan.
Soon thereafter, in a matter of a few seconds, my door swings wide open to reveal a fuming Tristan. Que the gulp.
And I'm in a pile of poop.
"Tristan," I release a breath I didn't know I was holding as I stare at the guy before me. Not that I'm surprised to see him here since he always finds a way to know most of my whereabouts especially when they put me in danger.
"What the hell were you thinking, Hailey?!" He barks furiously, causing me to flinch in my seat. "Siding with Luther? Really?!"
"I'm not siding with the devil, Tristan!" I stand up from my chair and ball my hands into fists on either side of my body.
Tristan walks up to me and stands dangerously close with his towering height. "Well, it sure does look like it." His voice is dangerously low, sending shivers crawling down my spine.
I tilt my chin up a bit so that I can look directly into his eyes. "He has my mother and I will do whatever it takes to get her back." I tell him with all determination possible.
"By playing his games?" He steps back and frustratingly runs both hands through his dark hair and down his face. "And when do you think he'll ever let her go, uh? After what. . . winning tonight? Or after winning tonight? Or after winning in the next event? Or the one after that?"
