"Alright, Lix. I don't want to push you. How've you been?"
"Good. You?"
"I'm alright."
We sit in silence before my eyes catch the time. 6:49 PM.
"Shit. I forgot about Mei. Sorry Noona, but I need to go," I say. Before Yeji can reply I rush down the stairs bumping into Hyunjin's friend.
"Oh! Are you okay--?" he asks. I nod, trying to get past him.
"Hmm? Who are you? Hyunjin hasn't mentioned anyone living in his home?" the boy asks. I see the rest of Hyunjin and his friends approach me. I shrink back in fear.
"Who's this beauty?" a purple-haired boy asks.
"Have you been hiding him from us?" a girl with amber hair asks.
"Hi! What's your name?" another girl with her hair in a bun greets.
"Why are you staying at Hyunjin's house?" the red-haired boy who looks like the amber hair girl asks.
"Are you Hyunjin's boyfriend?' the amber-haired girl asks.
"Omg! If you are, why hasn't Hyunjin said anything about you?" the girl with the bun asks. I look at Hyunjin who bites his lip.
Of Course, Hyunjin wouldn't mention me to his friends. I'm an embarrassment to him, aren't I?
"I'm Hyunjin's family friend. I'm staying at his home because I have just moved from Malaysia since I got a scholarship here. A pleasure to meet you, my name is Lee Felix," I say politely. I notice Yeji staring at me in shock, before turning to glare at Hyunjin.
"Ohhh I see! No wonder Hyunjin hadn't said anything about you!" the purple-haired boy chuckles, "Nice to meet you too Felix. My name is Leno [pronounced Len-oh. Not Lee Know]. I'm one of Hyunjin's old school classmates."
"My name is Jane! Me and Yeji are best friends so that's how I know Hyunjin," the amber-haired girl smiles.
"I'm Casper," says the red-headed boy, "Me and Hyunjin are business partners."
"And I am Lena [pronounced Len-ah. Not Lee-na]. Leno's twin sister," the girl in bun greets.
I nod my head in reply before rushing outside.
"I hope I don't run into them again," I mutter to myself.
I walk away from the house and hop on the bus that takes me to my favorite person in the whole world. Mei. Well, not a person but a ghost.
I reach the destination, inhaling the familiar scent of emptiness.
"How've you been?" Mei asks.
"Nice way of asking - Why do you look like a ghost," I mumble.
"... Felix I warned you to let go of him. You're pushing yourself deeper and deeper. I don't want you to join me here so please, please remove your soul from that bastard. Or I may end up killing him myself," Mei whispers. I smile fondly at my only friend.
"I'm sorry Mei," I reply, "It's too late."
Mei floats down next to me, sighing deeply. I turn to her only to be surprised by what I see.
"Mei? You're crying?" I gasp.
"What? You thought ghosts don't can't cry? We were once humans, Felix. We have feelings. When you die, they tend to fade but sometimes something deeply emotional can bring your feelings back," Mei chuckles hoarsely while drops of tears roll down her pale cheek.
Seeing my only friend cry for the first time, something in me erupts emotion again. My eyes get glossy and before I realise, I'm crying. I rarely cry anymore, unless it's out of anger or frustration. I started realising my emotions were worthless. But watching Mei cry silently, makes me want to break down as well.
I'm sorry Mei. I really am. I'm sorry to everyone who tried to help me but I pushed them away. I'm sorry to myself for dragging it this far. I'm sorry to my lover who I'm not enough for. I'm sorry...
I let the silent tears come while hoping for a better life next time.
Everything is blurry.
