School was different and life was different. The same boys who ignored me and praised Deanna couldn't stop staring at me or talking to me. If I didn't know better I would say Deanna hated sharing the spot light. The difference between me and her is that I didn't want all this attention I liked knowing who liked me for who I am not how I look. Besides that I didn't really know how to handle it I have never been liked by a boy before as far as I know, and I had gotten used to being just the pretty girl's fat best friend.
With only two weeks until summer Deanna and I had gone shopping like crazy to get ready for California. It felt so good to try on new clothes for the first time since I lost the weight. "Try this on Deanna said handing me a pale blue sun dress that matched the pink one she had in her hand. We both walked out and looked into the mirror. "These are so cute!" I said excitedly. She grabbed two pairs of pink and purple high wasted shorts both size 2. We both walked out again hers fit her perfectly. "These are way to big." I said using one hand to keep them up and the other to find it in a size 00. Deanna's smile dropped she wasn't used to me being smaller then her. She was still really skinny but my frame was more petite. We hit up 4 more stores and had too many bags so we decided to call it a day.
With one more week until summer I was feriously packing. All my clothes at my beach house were going to be to big for me now so I would have to pack even more then usual. After I packed my clothes I pulled out a big bag that I would use as my carry on. I filled it with magazines my Ipad which was loaded with movies for the flight and any other nessisary things to keep me entertained.
My dad was already down in California he did most of his work there so he was always flying back and forth. He would be working on his new hotel opening all summer. We built the beach house two years ago. My dad lucked out on a buissness deal and his hotel buissness has been sky rocketting. I mean it's a good thing because we have a lot of money now but I still wish I could see him more often.
"He's really hot." Deanna whispered secretly pointing at the boy sitting by himself at the airport starbucks. "Calihan!" The starbucks lady called out reading the name on the order. The boy got up and grabbed his coffe. Ours was called right after him. Deanna was mixing cream into her coffee. I went to walk over to her when I tripped on a bag and knocked over the "Calihan" boy's drink. Luckily it didn't get on anyones stuff well except his sweat shirt. "Im so clumsy." I mumbled. "Im really sorry." I said, using my napkins to clean up the mess. He didn't look mad though. "It's fine." He said trying to reasure me. I brought him more napkins. "What about your shirt?" I asked. "I have a shirt under this." He said pulling his sweat shirt over his head. His shirt came up a little and I could see his abs. Deanna was right he was really hot. "Do you want me to buy you a new sweat shirt?" I asked grabbing all the used napkins and throwing them out. "No it's fine really he said." Deanna came back over to me wondering what just happened. She looked at me then the boy. "Lets go get some gum for the plane." She said walking away as I followed.
I grabbed three packs of gum and a huge bag of sour patch kids and brought it to the register. Deanna bought a magazine and sugar free gum.
We walked over to our section. "Now boarding first class." The lady on the microphone said. We checked all of our bags already so we only had to carry our purses. We got in line and handed the flight attendanat the plane tickets. Deanna always got the window seat so I sat in the middle hoping that no one would have the third seat so I could stretch out. The flight from Illinois to California was always atleast 5 hours long, so Deanna and I liked to sleep the first two hours.
Almost everyone was on the plane already. Deanna was already curled up in a ball about to go to sleep. Still no one in the seat next to me so I put the middle arm rest up and put my feet on the third seat. I was about to fall asleep myself when someone tapped my shoulder. "Excuse me." I heard a mans voice. I turned around to face him. Oh lord it was the Calihan boy this couldn't get any worse. When he saw my face and made the connection from earlier he laughed a little. I moved my legs back to my seat and sat up right. I didn't really know what to say to the cute guy I spilled coffee on so I said nothing. Deanna was now completely asleep.
I didn't really feel comfortable falling asleep infront of him. Like what if I started talking in my sleep or worse snoring with me it was unpredictable. I decided to play it safe and listen to music. I grabbed my beats out of my bag and plugged it into my phone when... "Please put all tray tables up and turn off electronics until further notice." Said the pilot over the inercom.
Now I had to sit there next to him and I had nothing to distract myself and my best friend was asleep. Please don't make conversation please don't make conversation. "Is this yours?" He said "What!?" I asked abruptly. He was holding out my pack of gum. "Yeah. Where did you find it?" I asked. I looked down and my whole bag had spilled out and all my stuff was on the floor. "Crap" I said. I got on the floor trying to pick it all up I probably looked so stupid right now. I looked up and he was on the floor too helping me grab my stuff. First I spilled coffee on him now he's helping me pick up my stuff how embaressing. I was reaching for a lipstick under his seat and I moved my head back up and bumped heads with him. "I'm so so sorry." I said. He rubbed his head. "We keep bumping into each other like this and I still don't know your name." He said laughing. "Kat" I said still on the ground facing him. Why was he talking to me? Boys never talked to me before especially when I kept spilling things and hitting them. I heard Deanna move in her seat and mumble something in her sleep, I almost forgot she was here too. "Spencer" he said. He was even hotter up close his eyes were a deep blue and his blonde hair pushed back and his smile oh boy too perfect. "Kat?" He asked. "Yeah" I answered "I think we should get up now." He said. I pulled myself up onto my seat and grabbed my bag.
We talked most of the flight I actually learned a lot about him. He lives in the town over from my beach house, his parents are divorced, he's got an older brother, he plays lacross, and he's a junior.
"Kat get up!" Deanna whispered into my ear. I opened my eyes and realized I was laying on something or wait someone.... Omg Spencer's lap. I slowly sat up so I wouldn't wake him. "That is so embaressing!" I shreiked to Deanna. "I just woke up and saw you laying on the hot boy from starbucks." Deanna whispered. "Do you think he was awake when I fell asleep?" I asked "That would be so awkward for him." She said. I sat perfectly still in my seat not making any noise because I didn't want him to wake up until it was time to get up so I could run away and never see him again and face what a mess of a person I am.
He was still alseep when the plane landed and everyone was getting their bags. "Meet you by the gates." I told Deanna as I grabbed my bag and ran off. "I just woke him up." Deanna told me coming off the plane. "Lets get out of here." I said.
It was 10:30 and we waited for our driver to pick us up outside of the airport. The air here seemed so much better then Chicago it made me feel alive. I pulled off my sweat shirt and tied it around my waist. Deanna put her hair into a big blonde bun. A black limo pulled up the numbers on it matched the ones my dad texted me. We got in and the driver put our bags in the trunk. "It's hotter here at night than chicago is during the day." Deanna said. I loved everything about these California Summers.
