That One Summer

Chapter 3:"No one can know"

I woke up early the next morning Deanna was still asleep. I rolled out of bed and walked into my bathroom I washed my face and brushed my teeth. I walked into the closet and went through my swimsuit drawer. I pulled out a yellow bikini I just bought. I always had early morning swims during the summer. I loved it when everyone was still asleep and I could just be alone to think.

I crept down the stairs and opened the sliding glass doors that led to the yard. I put my stuff down on the table in the little shaded cabanna. I pulled my long hair out of it's messy bun and let it free. I was staring at the pool about to dive in when I heard the doors slide open. Colton was standing there with his phone in hand. He just gave me a dirty look and walked towards the cabanna to make a call. I jumped into the pool making a splash. Why does he have to ruin my alone time too. 

I did breath strokes back and forth until I was so bored I just laid there floating. Maybe if I close my eyes I will wake up and realize he's apart of some nightmare. Nope this is real life... sadly.

He was looking at me from the cabanna. He finished his call and brought a chair over to the end of the pool. His hair was longer and jelled up for texture it used to be a clean buzz cut before he left. He fixed his black hair out of his eyes and sat by the pool looking down at me. "What?" I asked in a vicious tone. He didn't answer he just continued to look at me. I went under water and popped up on the other side. That didn't break his stare. "Is something wrong?" I ask trying to be as mean as posible. 

For the first time he started talking. "You're just really hot now. What happened?" He asked. I didn't know to take that as an insult or compliment. I splashed him with water not in a playful way though. "Stop blushing I don't like you." He said in a condessending tone. "I would just have sex with you." He said grinning. I didn't know how exactly to respond to that. "Can you go away." I said feeling the urge to punch him. "I know you feel the same way about me." He said smiling his stupid smile. "Really because the only thing I feel for you is sorry." I said "For what?" He asked. "I'm sorry that you think you can do and get whatever you want because one day you're going to want someone who doesn't want you back and you wont be strong enough to handle that." I said agressively. He started laughing. "Like who?" I didn't really know what to say the adrenilin pumping through my veins "Me" I blurt out wishing more than anything I could take it back. "Challenge excepted" He said grinning. "I like this game you wont take long I can tell you that right now. It's a lot easier to get someone who wants you more than you want them." He said. "Oh really? I bet you will fall in love with me and I'll end up playing you." I said. "This little game we have going on is so twisted, I love it. First one to fall in love loses." He said. "Fine. But rules are no one can know about the game." I said. "You got a deal Kitty Kat." He said smiling his dumb smile and walking into the house. 

   "You're going to get skin cancer if you stay out here any longer." Derek said walking out with Colton. Deanna and I sit up staring at them until they walk away. "Lets all go do something. You two have all summer to get tan." Derek says. "I know what to do." Colton says when we dont respond.

He picks me up from lawn chair. I kick and push trying to get him to put me down. He's wearing a sleeveless shirt and swim shorts. He tries to throw me into the pool but I hold on too tight and he falls too. I don't see him when I reach the surface. I turn around in the water and he's right there so close I hear him breathing I push off of his stomache with my hands. His abs are rock hard. He pulls me close though. I struggle to get out but I'm not strong enough. "I forgot how much fun you are Kat." he says finally letting me go. 

Deanna and Derek have just been staring at us the whole time. They looked confussed. "Derek's right we all should go do something. We've been tanning for hours." Deanna said grabbing her tanning lotion and sunglasses and putting them into her beach bag. 

We go into our room. Wear this she says throwing me a black flowy tank top with a pocket on the top left and a pair of white cut off shorts. I slip on my vans and grab a small over the shoulder bag. Deanna puts on a pink lace top and jean shorts with strappy sandles. Her hair is in perfect tight blonde curls. My hair is dry by now but its wavy from the water. 

Colton and Derek are waiting in the drive way in Derek's Black escalade blasting their music. We get in the back. 

"Where should we go?" Derek asked. Colton turned around in his seat and gave me a strangly friendly smile. I crinckled my nose and gave him a dirty look. "Let's go to the pier we can look at the cool little stands." I said. My favorite place to go was the pier not during the day with all the stands, but at night when the only lights  come from the other side of the ocean and reflect off the water. Ever since we started coming here I would always try to go there by myself at night.

The pier was on the beach with all the stands of artwork and jewlry. It stretched far out over the water. It was huge and very tall. Deanna and I ran up the pier and looked at the jewlry. "So I know you're going to think this is strange, but I think Colton is so so sexy I mean look at him." She said gazing at Colton who was at another stand with my brother. "He's kind of an ass." I said. "So you don't like him?" She asked. "God no!" I answered. She just smiled and we walked over to a different stand. "Ok I think we're done with our shopping." I said.

"Let's all get some food." Derek suggested. We walked to a restaurant right off the beach called "Shacks" I put my stuff down on the table. Derek and Colton went to order us all hamburgers. A cute blonde boy came over to me and Deanna. "Hey girls me and my friends over there" He said nodding over to the four guys sitting at a table, "thought you two were really pretty." The boy said. Deanna instantly turned on the charm and started flirting as if by instinct. Maybe boys want to talk to me now but that doesn't mean I know how to talk to boys, well without making a complete fool out of myself. Deanna was a pro she knew when it was ok to touch his hair or how far to take a joke and how to compliment yet still play hard to get. "You guys want to come eat by us. I'll buy you whatever you want to eat." The blonde surfer looking boy said. "They're just going to sit here." Colton said in a less then happy tone.

When we we younger Colton always acted like he was so much older than me, like it was his job to keep me safe. When my brothers friends would swear or say something inapropreate Colton would never tell me what it meant. I always hated how he was only two years older and he thought I was just some baby. He wasn't in charge of me then and he isn't in charge of me now. "We'll sit with you." I told the surfer boy. Every one looked at me surprised. I grabbed Deanna's hand and brought her to the table with me. "Maybe Colton's right maybe we should just go sit with him." She whispered to me as we walked toward the table of guys. 

When our order was ready I got up to get the burgers while Deanna continued to simaltaniously flirt with all the surfer boys. I grabbed the burgers and four napkins. "What the hell?" Derek said. "What?" I asked in a flat tone. "You don't even know those guys." he said. "We're just eating calm down they aren't pedofiles." I said. "I don't get it why didn't you listen to Colton. He told you not to eat with them." Derek said. "Since when is Colton my dad. I'm old enough to make my own disisons." I said taking the burgers back to the table of guys. 

In the car Colton looked really pissed off. No one talked there was nothing to say. Deanna and I got the numbers of the guys from the restaurant. "So tomorrow Deanna and I are going to a party with those boys." I said just to make Colton mad. Derek and Colton remained silent all the way home.
