The Harvest

A quiet night with a mostly black sky and little to no stars making it through this sad night. A quiet backyard that is a simple square shape. Nothing of note is unique about this grassy backyard beside a square stone off to the left of the yard. A young man stands over it eyes puffy from crying once more over it. Under the stones lies the one thing he loved most in the world, his Dog. He has had this dog for more than half his life. His grey eyes are just staring into the square to find answers to his sadness, but nothing is there. It has been a month since his beloved pet's passing, but the sadness has not waned at all. He has been told by his neighbors to stop going out and crying till 4 in the morning. All he wants is his beloved pet back, but he knows that's him being selfish. After a lot of silence, he asks "Why am I still sad?" He was not expecting an answer to his question, but a voice answered him "Because you lost someone you loved with all your heart." In fear, the man turns around to see what can only be described as Death—a tall looming figure in a black cloak with no way to tell its face or anything. The man asks, "Are you here to take me?" Fear was evident in his voice and body but still a sliver of hope remained in his heart. Death says "I'm here to have a simple chat with a man who is mourning and only has the wind to hear his cries of pain. I'm here to listen to your despair and heartache like I have every night since your beloved companion passed. I'm here because I care." Confusion is now shown on the man's face as he has so many questions but only one can escape his mouth and it's a simple "Why?" Death comes closer without showing he moved at all. He says "Because I must care. If I do not, then life has no meaning. If I'm the end I must care about the beginning and middle. An end that does not care has no right to be the end. I care so when I end that someone can care as well. Back to it, I'm here to listen to all that you must say." The man not fully understanding what death has told him just says "I'm still stuck. I hate that I'm sad and that turns into the hate that I felt in the first place which gets replaced by even more sadness. People keep telling me it will get better, but it just hasn't. I just want something to change." The man's eyes seem to have tears well up in his eyes once more and Death says "Why do you think you don't have the right to have a different grieving process than others? Your way of handling this will be different from others. You should let this process happen and feel no shame in it. Let yourself be sad until it's over until you start to feel joy that you got to care for your pet that much to be that sad when he passed." The man chuckles and says "A little bit of wisdom huh? So, I should just accept I'm going to be sad for some time?" Death shakes his head and says, "You will always be sad that they left your life but one day joy will overcome that sadness when you look back." The man whips away his eyes and nods as he says "Thanks for listening to me. Was he loved in your opinion?" Death simply nods and leaves. The man says goodnight to the grave of his pet and to Death. The man will stop mourning and live some more. He lived a life where he loved more people and pets. Once he dies, he wants to thank Death for being there when he was alone that night in his youth.

This is a small legend in this world. It's just so I write something. I hope you all like this.
