The sun started to sink down to the horizon, lighting up the sky in hues of red and orange. Heizou's fingers curled slightly tighter around Ink's, but not enough to be noticeable. It felt so nice to finally hold his hand. The feeling of Ink's soft palm and calloused fingertips against his skin brought him unbridled joy. He never thought he'd get to go on such a lovely date with him.

Ink held the giant shark in his free arm. He seemed very happy with it, which Heizou was glad to see. How had he won that, exactly? He went to the amusement park every day since it opened up to practice the ring toss. He knew Ink loved sharks and would likely want the plushie, so he did his best to know exactly how to land all of the rings necessary to get it for him. All part of his grand plan to get Ink to fall in love with him...

In the end, all that practice had paid off. Ink was happy and impressed. The two lost track of time as the day went on, ending up wasting the whole day away together. They were now walking down the street, hand-in-hand. The lighting of the sunset made Ink look radiantly gorgeous.

"I'd offer to let you spend the night at my place, but you probably don't want to. And I don't want you to think I have ulterior motives, heh..." Heizou stared down at his feet, suddenly feeling himself grow nervous. He tried to sync his steps with Ink's as a distraction. (I SWEAR IT TOOK ME SO LONG TO COME UP WITH THE PHRASE "ULTERIOR MOTIVE" UGHH)

"Ulterior motives?" Ink chuckled and nudged Heizou with his shoulder. "Hey, don't be nervous. I'd totally stay with you, and I don't think you're the type to have ulterior motives. But Scara tends to not like cooking only for himself, so I've gotta go home to make sure he eats."

Heizou nodded in understanding. After a few more minutes of walking, they reached Ink's apartment.

"Tell Scara I said hi, ok? I'll see you on Monday." Heizou began to walk away, but he was stopped by Ink's hand grabbing onto his.

"Wait, um... thank you. For the date, I mean. I really appreciate it. It was a lot of fun..." The grip Ink had on his hand faltered, and Heizou could tell he felt awkward.

"I'm glad you liked it! We should go on another date sometime~." He pulled Ink slightly closer. The temptation to kiss him was overwhelming...

But he knew Ink wouldn't like that, so he didn't. Heizou wanted so badly to run his hands along Ink's sides, trail his fingers down his spine, and kiss his soft, pink lips, but he couldn't. Not yet, at least.

Heizou's eyes were trained on the ceiling. He thought of a million things all at the same time, the success of the date, the way Ink was starting to warm up to him, how Ink used to act like just being near Heizou was painful for him, the two had made a lot of progress in the past few weeks. The way they used to interact was vastly different than today.

Heizou also thought about the present. He thought about the soft pillow under his head, the soft chimes currently emitting from his phone (his friends likely wanted to know how the date went), the empty feeling of not having his arms wrapped around something, and the quiet whirring of the fan above his head. To think, everything that had happened in the past few weeks led him to this moment, lying on his back on top of his bed, exactly as he had the day he was rejected.

Thoughts of the future rushed through his mind as well. What would happen if he ended up actually getting Ink to fall for him? He could guess. They would date, at first it would be awkward and everyone would be surprised that they of all people were together. After a while, though, they'd get used to each other and all their friends would come to accept it.

They would become a cliché high school romance, two people who don't get along eventually falling in love and dating. They'd be elected for prom court and everyone would cheer for them. Then, they'd graduate and their story would end, but they'd keep the little plastic crowns to remember each other.

But would their story end? Maybe it would continue, maybe they'd go to college together and be a cozy little couple who go to college parties together and make lots of friends. Maybe they'd go to separate colleges, but their relationship would persevere. They'd video call every day and visit each other on breaks.

Maybe after they graduate college, they'd get married and move into an apartment together. They'd have to adjust to living together, but it would make their bond stronger. The two of them would spend every night in each other's arms, supporting each other through thick and thin.

Heizou would become a detective and Ink would continue to make music. They would have to be apart sometimes, as Ink would have to go on tour with his friends. During those times, their home would feel empty to Heizou. If the group had concerts near wherever they decide to live, Heizou would undoubtedly buy front row tickets. Ink would tell him how silly it is, since Heizou can see him play any time he wants, but Heizou would shake his head and tell him there was nothing he wanted more than to support his beloved husband.

Eventually, they'd grow old together and celebrate their 50th anniversary. Heizou would plan a big, romantic evening for the two of them, and they'd be content together. He'd tell Ink how, no matter how much time they spend together or how old they get, Ink would always look breathtakingly beautiful to him. Ink's eyes would well up with tears, and he'd attempt to hold them back, but he'd fail to do so. He'd end up crying happy tears with his face buried in Heizou's shoulder, telling him over and over how much he loves him.

Heizou hoped so badly that would happen. He wanted to have a comfortable and loving relationship with Ink for the rest of their lives. If his whole life could be spent loving Ink with his every breath, it would be a life well lived.
