a/n: happy lunar new year, everyone! this one-shot took me so long to write, so i really hope you enjoy it. it's much longer than my usual one-shots (or my chapters), and i honestly didn't think a lot of the plot through, so please let me know if you're confused about anything or if you have any suggestions. (let me know if you figure out which song i referred to in this story hehe.) hopefully, i'll republish this same story soon, but it'll be alyssa's version!
i hope you have the best year possible because you deserve nothing less <3 fighting!

"are you new?" a small boy asked, crouching down to be at the same level as a girl who was hiding underneath a slide.
the girl nodded wordlessly and looked up. she was pretty. "i'm christopher," he introduced with a huge grin, his dimples showing. "you can call me chris or chan— that's my korean name. what's your name?"
"alyssa," she said shyly, a small smile on her face. "i don't have a korean name because i'm not korean, but my parents call me 'lys' or 'lyssa'!"
chris cautiously reached his hand out towards her. "recess is almost over, but i think we're in the same class. do you wanna come with me? we can be friends!"
"really?" the girl asked, her brown eyes sparkling. "okay!" she took his hand and crawled out from under the slide, suddenly a lot less nervous for the rest of the school day.
he nodded excitedly, his brown curls bouncing. "let's go, then!"

"mom, look! there's lys!" chris exclaimed, pointing at his best friend.
his mom laughed, shaking her head. "you saw her yesterday, darling. she came over to our house, remember?"
the boy pouted. "yeah, but..."
"let's go see her, yeah? she seems excited to see you, too."
"yay!" he cheered, letting go of his mom's hand and running across the courtyard to hug his best friend. "hi lys!"
"hi, chris!" she replied back, matching his enthusiasm. "we're in the same class again this year!"
"really?" he asked, pretending as though he didn't know that already. "that's awesome!"
"you're gonna be sick of me," she giggled.
chris shrugged. "i'd rather be sick of you than be sick with the flu or something."
the two moms shared a look before pursing their lips to hide their smiles. "they're sweet together," the boy's mom observed.
"they are," alyssa's mom added. "she's always been nervous to make friends, so i'm really glad she's friends with chris. he makes her happy."
