The breeze was warm as you stepped out of your shared apartment, fiancé following close behind you. Nervousness bubbled in your stomach, unsure of how to bring up a specific topic.'Would it be safer to tell him before or after dinner?' You thought.
You had no doubt that Javier would be happy, you just aren't sure how happy.
The two of you only talked about having children a few times, nothing you expected to happen so soon. The topic was usually brought up after spending time with his niece and nephew, they always made you think of what it would be like to have a family of your own with Javi.
The car ride was quiet and peaceful as the radio hummed a soft tune throughout the vehicle. Your foot tapped in rhythm, not sure if it was because of the music or how nervous you were. You hadn't even noticed the amount of traffic outside.
You turn your head towards Javi, his attention fully focused on the highway ahead of him. He must've noticed your gaze as his lips tug into a smile.
The whole gambling situation really messed him up. He came home to you a wreck, not knowing what to do next. He's been moping around for weeks so you thought it'd be sweet for you two to have a day out together, and get some dinner. That's where you were headed now, you wanted Javi to forget about everything for at least a few hours.
You didn't plan on having any big news for him, but you prayed that it would inspire him again and bring him out of his depressed state.
'What if it doesn't? What if it makes him even more stressed than he already is?' You slouch in the seat, thinking of the best way to go about this.
Your mind wracking up conversation starters as Javiers phone starts to ring.
"Who is it?" He tilts his head, motioning for you to pick up his phone.
"David." You answer. He takes a deep breath before nodding, taking the phone from your hands and swiping to answer.
Traffic was awful, no one was getting anywhere, there was no need to worry about Javi being on the phone.
He sat back in his seat. "Hey."
"It's time. Get over here." Davids voice rings through the phone.
The words you dreaded. You and Javier both knew his father was sick, Javi was just too caught up in his own mess to make the time to go see his father, and now that he was on his death bed you both felt regret about your plans for today.
"Yeah..yeah we're on our way, we just gotta-"
"Now, Javi. You need to hurry. Look, I'm not giving you shit, okay? I'm just... You weren't here when Dad was sick, okay, I get it, but... you need to fuckin' be here when he goes."
For a moment you see anger flash in Javiers eyes, quickly washed away with sadness.
"I know, alright? I'm just... I'm on my way." He ends the call then looks up towards the traffic, no one's moved a single inch.
Anxiously, he runs his hands through his hair, whispering swears to himself before turning towards you.
"You don't have to come, but I'm gonna start walking."
You frown, placing a hand on his arm. "Javi, I'm coming."
A soft smile forms on his face and he nods, looking around one last time before pulling the car over to the side as far as possible.
