Charlie is coming around and I can't complain; I want to spend as much time with him as possible at the moment, obviously because of the circumstances. I'm confident this will work, we're Nick and Charlie, soulmates, as Aled likes to describe us.
(KNOCK KNOCK)
I open the door. "Char!" He jumps into my arms and I swing him around, and he giggles—that adorable giggle. I put him down and we share a short but meaningful kiss.
"I've missed you," I say.
"You saw me yesterday!"
"Too long.." I pull him into a hug and say, "So you're here to what? Try and beat me in Mario Kart, I'm guessing?"
"Oh, well yes, but no." My smile turns into a serious face.
"What do you mean?"
"I need to talk to you about something..."
"Have I done something, or—"
"No! It's just...well, I need...erm." I pause him and grab his hand, walking him to the living room and sitting him down. I take a deep breath before saying, "You can tell me anything, Char." He smiles softly.
"Okay, well, you know how you're going to university soon..." I nod.
"I'm just wondering if...if it will work the way we would want it to." What does he mean? We have been over this.
"Char, I'm confused. We have talked about this already; we agreed it would be okay."
"But Nick—"
"No, Charlie, we're not going to even think about it not working!"
"But—"
"No!" I raise my voice slightly.
"Nick! Listen to me, please...I'm not saying it won't work, but I'm just trying to consider the consequences it might have on us!" I sigh and rub my face with my hands, looking down. He puts his hand on mine before he speaks.
"Your heart is in denial." I don't even respond, just look at him with half confusion and love.
The past three years of my life have been nothing but wonderful. I hear his breath deepen.
"Nick, I love you so much, and I don't want anything to ruin that, so please, just for me, will you at least consider my thoughts?" I stare at the wall and think for a moment.
"Yeah, okay...I will," he nods. "But Charlie..." I speak.
"I love you more" he laughs.
"Impossible."
