I've been known to be impulsive. I let my emotions drive me most of the time and sometimes decisions I make aren't logical. I rely solely on my heart. So, what happens next shouldn't surprise anyone.
I knock on the door, my lip caught between my teeth, my other hand gripping my suitcase.
"I'll get it!"
I smile at my friend's voice, feeling slightly more at ease about being here. The door swings open. "Surprise," I say.
Beth's jaw drops, her eyes wide. "Mel?"
"Hi, Beffy."
"Who is it?" Viv impatiently calls.
I smile wider. "Can I come in?"
"Yeah, please." She moves aside, opening the door wider and allowing me to step inside. "I can't believe you're here right now. I thought you said trips home needed to stop?"
"Long story, and I would prefer to only tell it once. Can you wait for an explanation until after Viv yells at me?"
She laughs. "Alrighty. I would offer to help with your luggage, but...you know." She gestures to her injured knee.
We start to climb the stairs.
"How's rehab?"
"Slow but going well. It's just hard seeing everyone else leave for full training whilst we're still stuck in the gym and can't even run yet."
"You'll get there, lovey, and Meado will be back and better than ever."
"I hope so."
"Beth! Who was at the bloody door?" Viv asks as we enter the living room, her back to us.
"Language, Vivianne," I playfully scold.
My best friend's head turns, eyebrows raised. "What took you so long?"
Beth and I exchange a confused glance. "Huh?"
"I expected you last night," Viv says.
"How did you know I would come?"
"Leah called me in tears after you two talked yesterday, told me what she said and how you just hung up. I know you, Mel. You still love her. I knew you would come and at least try to hear her out."
"How come you told me none of this?" Beth asks.
"Because you're a blabber mouth and you'd gush about them getting back together and scare Mel off."
Beth pouts but doesn't argue.
"So, when are you going to talk to her?"
"Tomorrow."
"No."
"No?"
Viv shakes her head. "Go now."
"But I haven't been to the hotel yet to unpack, and I booked the next few days off. What's the rush?"
"First of all, you're not staying at a hotel." She steals my suitcase from me, walking as quickly as she can with her knee issue down the hall. "Secondly, you need to do this now before you lose your nerve."
"The Dutch are so demanding," I mutter.
"Don't I know it," Beth whispers to me.
"We just know best and are straightforward about it," Viv shrugs. "Here, go talk to her." She holds out her car keys. "I would drive you myself, but I don't feel like waiting for you."
I look to Beth, begging her to intervene. She just winks at me. "Traitor," I mouth at her. Reluctantly, I take the keys from Viv, knowing she wouldn't take no for answer.
