Under the reddish sky of Requiem, the Warthog's engine hummed a low, persistent growl. The mission was clear, but not exactly. For Seven has told you that you need to reach this location, of course you've asked your questioned to why but she gave a rather complex expression, like a mixture of disgust and panic. After seeing such a new look on your... Uh... Girlfriend..?
Y/n's eyes wandered to Seven, his focus shifting from the road ahead of them to Seven's body. She was by no means curvey but she wasn't small either. She was rather perfect...
"Your being a Perv~" Seven's gently tickled y/n's ears through, what y/n assumed to be a private comm. Causing him to flinch for a moment, then quickly shifting his focus on the road. A soft reddish glow painting his cheeks. Like a school boy standing in front of his crush. "How would you feel if I started at you like that~?"
"What! You did that a bunch this morning!" Y/n argued, remembering how he'd woken up to her softly message your scalp. Treating him like a child who had a bad dream the night before. Despite unironically having a wonderful dream about earth.
Seven snickered, her smile still present even if it had been covered by the helmet she wore. "You're so damn easy to tease~!" Y/n could feel the same cheeky grin she had when she was being smug, but instead of calling it out. He snickered himself, finding this situation funny. Afterall. If you had told that dumb little kid who thought undergoing the Spartan 2 procedure would give him super powers. That he'd fall in love with someone... He.. watched... Grow...
What was a funny retrospective thought about his history of both becoming a Spartan and meeting Seven. Turned it into a complete mess of thoughts that had Y/n cringing his ass off. Since, if he did tell his younger self such a outlandish story. He'd call his adult self a predator and call the SPs. Even if a human on AI relationship has its own rules.
"Damn, I really am a pred-" Y/n was about to say, trying to engage with another conversation with Seven to pass time, but his AI spoke first.
"At that hill, I'm picking alot of data signatures from a nearby source. I don't know what, or why, but I think we should get a closer look." Her unserious tone, stiffened into something that Y/n knew well. It was game time.
The Warthog, bearing the scars of their journey, crested a hill, revealing a scene that halted them in their tracks. The convoy that followed came to a stop, waiting for the signal to direct them what to do next, but Y/n paid them no mind. As he stated at the landscape in mild bewilderment.
Before them, nestled between the towering, ancient spires of Forerunner design, lay what appeared to be a massive gateway. It was an awe-inspiring sight, the entrance marked by pulsing glyphs that cast a soft, ethereal glow.
"What... What is that?" He questioned, his voice going into a slightly higher pitch.
"If the big cluster of data and it's shape would apply, then I'd assume that it's a sort of Cargo gate.
Y/n's gaze narrowed, the silence around the gateway not lost on them. Where they had expected sentinels or some form of automated defense, there was nothing but the whisper of the wind. It was unsettling, too convenient for their liking, and Y/n's instincts screamed of caution.
"Seven... Those signatures you mentioned? Where are they?" Y/n asked, a troubling thought coming to mind.
Seven frozen for a moment, "I have no idea, they'd just disappeared..."
Y/n surveyed the area, noting the scattered debris that hinted at recent combat. It was a silent testament to the dangers that lurked, possibly an indication that they were expected. Y/n's eyes then caught a flicker, a faint holographic projection near the gateway that seemed out of place, its intermittent pulsing like the beating heart of a beast lying in wait.
"Keep your eyes sharp. This could be an ambush," Y/n warned, his voice steady, betraying none of the unease that tightened in their chest.
"Agreed.." Seven added, "but let go down first, without the others. I don't want them to get caught up in a obvious trap."
"Smart," Y/n hopped out the warthog and turned to face the small line of both human and recovered covenant vehicles retrofitted for transportation. Crudely admittedly but functionally enough to transport his group. "Guys." He spoke through through the comms. "Me and Seven are heading down to check out the area. Keep the area secure and if it gets hot. Get outta here. Seriously. I don't want anyone to risk their lives needlessly, just because I'm a Spartan."
A few Marines who stepped out of the vehicle from either curiosity or had been preparing to check out the surrounding area. Actually took a moment to openly stare at Y/n, they were actually shocked by the statement he made. Given that most of the time, Spartans seemed to only have tangible value compared to normal Marines but rather most actually Spartans. Like master chief didn't actually order them to hold back when a fight had been clearly to dangerous for them.
"You got it boss!" A marine spoke back to Y/n through the comms. Sharing a bit of excitement at the prospect of not having to fight a clearly impossible situation with shitty tactical gear that didn't work against most alien weapons. Others gave their affirmations and happy made themselves busy staying out.
"You sure that's a good idea? We could use the extra firepower if things got messy..." Seven got out of the warthog, moving to stand next to Y/N's side.
"We're not the UNSC." Y/n spat. His hatred rising as he remembered the countless times entire squads of Marines and civilians were left behind just to save a single seemingly unimportant Spartan and the subsequent screams he heard, just before they were all glassed.
"Y/n..." Seven's voice softened as she put a comforting hand on his shoulder. He grabbed her hand. The memories of what happened to them, to him, and others who he didn't know suffering terrible fates from either negligence or wrong priorities.
"I know..." he sighed, "Come on. Nows not the time to be in my feelings..." He let go of her hand and turned. Retrieving a shotgun for the warthog and a energy carbine for Seven. "Here." Y/n offered her the weapon. To which she took with a soft. "Thank you."
Once armed, y/n and Seven moved down the cliff. Finding a natural path that lead onto the platform with the gate. Nothing eventful had happened during the trek down but it was the lack of anything that set your nerves on fire and worsening the thought you'd be harboring for a short while now.
"Seven?" He asked, his habit of relying on her ability showing it's self.
There was... A lot of wheezing and hard breathing at the other end of the private comms and it took a solid few minutes for her to reply. "T-they're still g-gone. WHY AM I SWEAT-"
Y/n cut of the comms for a second as something immediately caught his eye. A sudden energy fluctuation rippled through the air—a whisper of Forerunner technology awakening. It was a subtle hint, perhaps too subtle for an untrained eye, but to Y/n, it was as clear as a siren's call. Defense mechanisms were activating, or perhaps, it was the presence of cloaked enemies
"Shit! You called it! Get down!" Y/n moved to get low, but when he saw how winded and slow Seven was moving he quickly tackled her to the ground.
Multiple layers of defenses came online at once. First a large dome shield formed. Covering the entire platform and the gate making it practically impossible to enter or exit, second was the rapid reformation of a rather ungodly amount of Promethean enemies, and third was the sudden appearance of turrets.
"Oh. You got to be kidding me..."
